Son Saved By Weapon Hitting Case
Tokio, Sept. 17.—A knife was hurled towards Princess Louise of Sweden, Sir John Tilley, British ambassador, and Albert de Bassompierre, Belgian ambassador, yesterday, while a luncheon was in progress at the British embassy. The weapon struck Roger Tilley, son of the ambassador, near the heart, but was deflected by a gold cigarette case. Young Tilley was uninjured. The would-be assassin escaped.

It is not known whether Sir John, Ambassador De Bassompierre or the princess was the intended victim.
“Police are combing Tokio for the intruder. The exact nationality of the man is undetermined, young Tilley apparently being the only guest who saw him. He said the man was dressed in western attire and believes he may have been Japanese. Police and vernacular newspapers are inclined to believe the assailant is Chinese.”
Directors See Need of Extension
This year the exhibits filled the buildings to capacity. Overflow booths were placed on the grounds. Manufacturers and retailers are demanding more space and a dozen have asked that instead of the exhibition closing on Friday, as it will this year, that in future it remain open to make Saturday the biggest day of the week. This was brought out at the daily meeting of the directorate which was held in the board room of the general offices at 11 a.m. today.

All three exhibitions want to extend the length of time the turnstiles will turn the crowds towards their annual features. London is expected by her exhibitors to increase her time at least one day. The officials of the C. N. E., it was brought out today, are seriously considering a three weeks’ show. Ottawa may have similar intentions. In any case the first move on the part of Ottawa or Toronto will have an important effect upon London. The Forest City follows the Queen City in point of dates. Toronto follows Ottawa.
Again Attempts To Finish Strike
London, Sept. 17.—Premier Baldwin today began another attempt to end the deadlock growing out of the coal miners’ strike. He had an hour’s interview this morning with Evan Williams, president of the Mining Association, after which he called in A. J. Cook, general secretary of the Miners’ Federation, and other union officials.
The object of the interview was to ascertain the prospect of holding a three-party conference to include the full executive of the Miners’ Federation and representatives of the District Owners Associations, who have maintained a stand against the national settlement demanded by the men.
The premier’s meeting with the miners’ officials, which was adjourned for lunch, is believed to have been confined to seeking a formula which would combine district agreements with a national agreement, with a view of immediate resumption of work.
