Forty-one hours after her triumphal entrance through New York, the gateway to America, and 22 hours after her arrival in the nation's capital, Rumania's queen was formally received by the President and Mrs. Coolidge. Her reception at the White House this afternoon at 4 o'clock in the famous blue room, that has witnessed a century of presidential receptions, the return call of the President and Mrs. Coolidge at the Rumanian legation shortly afterwards, and the queen's entertainment at a state dinner at the White House tonight, discharged the traditional amenities of nations. The functions came as the climax to a day in which Queen Marie delved deep into American history, visiting as preliminaries to her White House call, Washington's home at Mount Vernon, the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington National cemetery, and the Lincoln memorial. The reception ceremony at the White House was brief and formal, two official cars bearing the seal of the United States, called at the legation which is for the moment a royal residence Under escort of J. Butler Wright, personal representative of the president, and Radu T. Djuvara, Rumanian charge, the queen and Prince Nicholas and Princess Ileana, were taken swiftly to the White House where a fringe of government clerks from the big, nearby departments lined the railings for a glimpse of the visitors as they passed into the grounds. Secretary Kellogg had joined the President and Mrs. Coolidge in the blue room, as is customary on such occasions. Mr. Wright announced the queen. A moment later she presented her children to the chief executive and (Continued on Page Eight) afternoon, the visitors were taken on an automobile tour of the city and vicinity. Following this, the highway boosters were entertained at an amusement park here, where Franklin D. Roosevelt, former assistant secretary of the navy, made a brief address. Mr. Morgenthau, noted for his diplomatic service in Turkey and recognized on economic and financial affairs, viewed conditions in the south with optimism. " Eastern capital no longer hesitates to make large developments in the south, " he said. " The southern section of the United States is showing to the world and to the investing public that it offers substantial returns to capital on a practical, business basis. " Principal business of the highway convention will be transacted at tomorrow's sessions. One of the important questions to be considered is the selection of routes to Tampa, Florida and New Orleans. The convention ends tomorrow afternoon. Mr. Morganthau was the principal speaker at a dinner tonight for the visitors from several southern states and prominent men from the east, here for the convention which opened this afternoon. Adolph Ochs, publisher of the New York Times, a native Tennessean, is another important figure at the convention. Following appointment of committees at a short business session this afternoon, the visitors were taken on an automobile tour of the city and vicinity. The motorcade originating at Asheville, N. C., yesterday and increased in size by additions along the route, arrived at Stone Mountain, where a brief [?] rogram was held, about noon today. Welcome addresses and responses by the visitors made up the program at the foot of the mountain where the huge Confederate memorial is being carved. Following this, the highway boosters were entertained at an amusement park here, where Franklin D. Roosevelt, former assistant secretary of the navy, made a brief address. Mr. Morgenthau, noted for his diplomatic service in Turkey and recognized on economic and financial afRepublican and Democratic Chairmen Are Called On For Testimony Publisher Renews Charge That Klan Dragon Corrupted Officials of State INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 19. - (AP) - Senator James A. Reed's senatorial committee today joined the search for the corruption that is alleged to exist in Indiana politics. The decision of Senator Reed to go on the trail of the corruption charges was made public at Chicago while a grand jury here pressed its inquiry into the same matter with a three hour examination of Fred Butler, former secretary of D. C. Stephenson, who as grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan is reputed to have held sway over high officials. Meanwhile, Thomas H. Adams, publisher of the Vincennes, Ind., Commercial, who with several associates has pursued an independent investigation continued in Columbus, Ohio, his search for evidence to substantiate charges that he insists he can prove before a fair investigating board. Clyde A. Walb, republican state chairman, and R. Earl Peters, state democratic chairman, were summoned today to appear before the Reed committee at Chicago tomorrow and they planned to leave tonight. Thus far no other Hoosiers have been called to Chicago, althought dispatches said several former Ku Klux Klan leaders might be subpoenaed. Adams has declared that his investigation developed that Stephenson while he headed the klan in Indiana, entered into corrupt agreements with officials high in state, county and city governments. The long examination of Butler who was in the grand jury room throughout the afternoon session, coupled with the fact that other close associates of Stephenson have also been subjected to lengthy interrogation, was taken as an indication that the investigating body was going thoroughly into the ex-grand dragon's GIRLS DISAPPEAR FROM FARM HOME Officers Seeking Hired Hand and Married Barber, Who Are Also Missing LUVERNE, ALA., Oct. 19. - Special to The Advertiser. - Crenshaw county authorities are seeking Wesley Haws and Otha Hooks, both 27, who are alleged to have disappeared Monday night with Ruth, 14 and Olvia Morrison, 16, daughters of Zebe Morrison, farmer, of near Luverne. Investigation of the marriage record at the Crenshaw county court house late Tuesday revealed that a marriage license was issued to Teddie Castlebury and Ruth Morrison, Monday. The license had not been returned late tonight, and no trace of the party has been found. In addition to being wanted for alleged implication in the disappearance of the two girls. Haws has a charge of grand larceny against him in a warrant sworn out Monday afternoon in connection with the alleged theft of automobile tires, officers say. The two girls left their home, four miles from Luverne on the Troy road, about 12 o'clock Monday night and are said to have joined Haws and Hooks who waited some distance from the house with an automobile. They are said to have left Luverne in a 1926 Ford touring car on which was attached an exhaust whistle. Officers say that it is their opinion that the party left immediately for Florida. The two girls had been gone several hours before the father discovered their absence, he told county officers. Mr. Morrison said that the two men probably parked the car a short distance from the house and signaled to his daughters with the exhaust whistle. It is not known how they left the compared with the first day of the drive last year showed a nice gain. Last year the first day netted only about $ 14, 000. Marion Rushton, campaign director was delighted with the showing made on the first day, but reiterated his statement that every person in Montgomery must be given an opportunity to subscribe if the goal is to be reached. " Experience has taught us that its the last few thousand that are the hardest to obtain, " he said, " and while this showing reflects a generous disposition on the part of contributors and hard work by the workers, we must not become overconfident or relax. " Many of the workers reported that subscribers were increasing their donations while others decreased their contributions under those of last year. All of the workers reported that they were given a cordial reception throughout the city, and were convinced that all that is needed to put the campaign over is to give every Montgomerian a chance. UNDERWOOD URGES COL. A. P. BRINDLEY Alabama Senator Wants Gadsden Man on United States Trades Commission WASHINGTON, D. C., Oct 19-Special To The Advertiser. - Appointment of Col. A. P. Brindley of Gadsden, as a member of the federal trade commission to succeed Houston Thompson, whose term recently expired was urged upon President Coolidge today by Senator Underwood. Col. Brindley is now one of the counsel for the commission. The office for which the senator recommended him pays $ 10, 000 a year. There are more than a half dozen applicants for the commissionership which will go to a democrat. The south has been insisting upon representation on this agency, as it has had no member in some years. It is probable that a southerner will be named, but inasmuch as Alabama, last winter was recognized by the appointment of R. V. Taylor, of Mobile, as an interstate commerce commissioner, the naming of Col. Brindley will be opposed by delegations from other states which have no representatives on important commissions in the federal government, however, the president has been seeking a way out of an embarrassing situation created by a contest between Virginia and North Carolina.
