QUEEN IS SPEEDING TO WASHINGTON ON HER SPECIAL TRAIN
TO WASHINGTON ON HER SPECIAL TRAIN Rain Hinders Ovation to Royal Visitor in Brief Stay in New York. ENTHUSIASM OVER TRIP SHOWN IN EVERY WORD Love of Americans Asked in Only Interview Granted-Princess " Too Young to Marry. " By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 18. - Queen Marie of Rumania was whisked through the city so quickly today that New Yorkers as a whole were hardly aware of her passing. She stepped ashore with her party at the Battery shortly before noon and hardly an hour later was on her way, in a special train, to Washington, ceremonies at City Hall having occupied the interim. Despite a morning rain that soaked the reception committee, thousands lined the path of the royal party's progress from the Battery to City Hall and on to the Pennsylvania Station, but the weather did much to prevent the noisy demonstration of welcome that was expected. City Hall Plaza itself was jammed with watchers, whose determination could not be dampened by rain, but they indulged in no cheering and the line of march was thinly populated in comparison to fair-weather crowds which have greeted other royalty and lesser celebrities with noisy abandon. Given Paper Snowstorm. Although there was not as much noise in the greeting as had been expected, the Queen and her party were treated to the peculiar accolade that lower Broadway always gives its famous visitors, the paper snowstorm. As the 30 automobiles of the royal party proceeded through the great canyon ticker tape spiraled to the street from a thousand windows and the contents of countless waste baskets fluttered through the air. Before her arrival the Queen granted an interview, possibly the only one she will give, on board the Leviathan. There were some 200 reporters huddled together in a dripping mass in the foyer outside the presidential suite about a roped inclosure. A hush fell suddenly and Marie was there, standing gracefully inside the ropes and smiling at the newspaper men and women. Clad in a wine-colored velvet coat with black fur collar and cuffs and with a gold turban topping her chestnut bob, the Queen was in striking contrast to the bedraggled throng about her. Takes Charge of Interview. Telling the reporters that she had heard on the boat about the barrage of questions they would hurl at her, the Queen proceeded to take the interview into her own hands. " I have not yet had time to see much of America, " she said, " but I am very much excited. I anticipate having a lovely time. I came here to see all the beautiful things in America. " I don't know what I want to see most. I want to see everything beautiful. And I know I shall find here some of the love that Rumanians have for Americans. " I am especially interested in the position of women here, what they have been doing in the cause of peace. Women have done so much for peace. Some day women will end war; that is, if they don't start fighting among themselves. " The interview lasted but a scant five minutes and during that time the Queen talked steadily, her voice a soft ripple with a suggestion of the Scotch Burr. Two or three times, however, reporters broke through with questions and the first of these, asked by a woman reporter, concerned the city's skyline. Both the Queen and the other reporters broke into a laugh at the trite stock query, which was allowed to go unanswered. Likes American Cooking. " Do you like American cooking? " was the next question, and the Queen replied: " Oh, don't I! " The almost countless trunks brought by the royal party also came in for notice. " They aren't really all full of my gowns, " the Queen assured her hearers. " I don't spend so much for clothes as has been reported. " After the interview the Queen, her daughter Princess Ileana, and her son Prince Nicholas, posed for photographs. While thus engaged some one asked the Queen whether she would be willing for Ileana to marry an American. " Oh, she is too young to have to worry about that yet, " the mother laughed, and Ileana and Nicholas both smiled. During her interview Marie spoke of her habit of constantly writing her impressions and this brought a question as to whether she would write for any syndicate while here. " Oh, I shouldn't have time for that, " she replied. Asked About Interview. " Is the report true that this is to be the only interview you will grant? " she was asked. " Well, " she responded, " I had to make some arrangement; I can't be giving interviews all the time, can I? " The representative of a Jewish newspaper asked about the treatment of Jews in Rumania. " The Jews have been very fond of me, " she replied. " I hope they always will be. All people are treated alike in my country, and the Jews are good people. " Ileana, a slender pale girl, wore a dark blue velvet coat, trimmed with fur, a semi-cloche hat with a silver ornament in front, a powder-blue dress, beige silk stockings and lizardskin pumps. Nicholas was in conventional morning attire. The Queen's interview was prefaced by a plea " for the love of all Americans. " " I love all of your people, " she said, " and I want you to take me to your heart. " Board Tug and Get Salute. After the interview the royal party was escorted aboard the Macom and the tug proceeded to the Battery. Opposite Governors Island the party was greeted by an official salute of 21 guns. Arrival of the Queen and her entourage at the Battery coincided with (Continued on Page 5, Column 3.)
ANTI-SMITH PLOT IN ILLINOIS BARED
IN ILLINOIS BARED Dry League Official Tells Reed Committee of Plan to Remove Nominee. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, October 18. - A movement to remove Frank L. Smith as the Republican Senatorial candidate, through an appointment to some other office by President Coolidge, was testified to today before the Senate campaign funds committee. The witness was Dr. George B. Safford, superintendent of the Illinois Anti-Saloon League, who detailed a conversation with Rev. Robert O'Brien, a Methodist minister of Chicago. Dr. Safford said he had been told that A. V. Smith, State's attorney of Lake County, would be named in Frank L. Smith's place and would have the backing of such men as Julius Rosenwald, millionaire Chicago merchant; Harold L. Ickes and others. " I told O'Brien that we were for Col. Frank L. Smith, " Dr. Safford said. " I added that as far as running an independent candidate, the AntiSaloon League could not join. " O'Brien said influences at Washington were at work to remove Col. Frank L. Smith. " Magill Urged as Candidate. " What were these influences? " asked Senator Reed, Democrat, Missouri, chairman of the committee. " Some sort of appointment to be tendered by the Coolidge administration, " Safford replied. He said Julius Rosenwald " had just got back from Washington. " Telling of a second visit of O'Brien, at which F. Scott McBride, general superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League, was present, Dr. Safford said the Methodist minister stated that it was proposed to place Hugh S. Magill of Springfield, Ill., in the field as an independent candidate and seek AntiSaloon support for him. " He said it was proposed to spend from $ 300, 000 to $ 400, 000 for Magill, " Safford said. " Dr. McBride told him he could not raise any such sum. " Plenty of Money. " With that, O'Brien banged the table with his fist and said, ' We have got the money and we propose to spend it. ' I said to him, ' You are not a bit better than the fellows you are criticizing '. " Dr. Safford said he pointed out that no such sum could be spent legally. " He replied that there were some holes (in the law) through which we can get, " Safford went on. " I said, ' Mr. O'Brien, you are unworthy to support Magill. ' " Dr. McBride said, ' You know you cannot elect your man, ' and Mr. O'Brien replied: ' Well, at least we can elect Brennan '. " Dr. Safford referred to large ex penditures by candidates in the Illinois primary. Rum Fight Put First. " If these expenditures were morally wrong, why are you supporting one of the beneficiaries? " Senator Reed asked. " Because the Anti-Saloon League believes that with the powerful political organizations existing it would be idle for us to put up an independent candidate, " Safford replied. " You will swallow a dry even though he raised a sum of money so large that when it was proposed to raise a similar sum for another candidate you condemned the man who proposed it, " Senator Reed observed. FOR INDIANA PROBE Former Dragon's Confidante Gives Documents From Bank Box to Jury. By the Associated Press. INDIANAPOLIS, October 18. - Papers and documents obtained from a safety deposit box in a local bank were laid before the Marion County grand jury today by Miss Mildred Meade, 23-year-old confidante of D. C. Stephenson, former Indiana Ku Klux Klan grand dragon. Miss Meade is regarded by investigators of the charges of conspiracy between Stephenson and State officials, as a " key " witness and it is believed her information will have an important bearing on allegations made by Thomas H. Adams, publisher of the Vincennes Commercial and other members of the Indiana Republican editorial association. Shortly after Miss Meade appeared before the grand jury she went with William H. Remy, prosecuting attorney, to an Indianapolis bank, procured papers from a safety deposit box and returned to the investigating chamber. Girl Held Under Bond. Miss Meade had been summoned to appear today before the grand jury that is investigating the charges. Miss Meade's presence in the grand jury room has been desired for several days, but authorities failed to locate her until late yesterday, when she was found at her home. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Meade, said she had been missing since October 8. Authorities produced her under $ 2, 500 bond as a material witness. Adams, who with several other publishers, made the first sweeping charges of political corruption, planned to renew his activities today. Adams in a series of statements has declared that he wants a broader investigation than that being conducted before the grand jury by Prosecuting Attorney Remy, whose jurisdiction, the publisher contends, is limited. Attorney Charges Tricks. Adams insists that publicity will be a potent force in exposing the corruption that he alleges has existed in State politics. Stephenson, who is now serving a life sentence for the murder of Madge Oberholtzer, is said to have recently given authority to Thomas V. Miller, Muncie, Ind., attorney, to obtain possession of certain documents which Adams declared would corroborate his charges. Miller has said this authority, contained in a written note, was obtained from him by a ruse perpetrated by Miss Meade. The former Klan leader has been represented by Adams as anxious to give evidence to support the corruption charges in order to avenge himself on persons who he considers failed to aid him during and since his trial for murdering Miss Oberholtzer. In addition to Miss Meade, officials summoned John P. Kiplinger of Rushville, an attorney for Stephenson, to come before the grand jury today. Adams was called. He was examined when the grand jury first met last Tuesday, but he is wanted for further testimony. Debs Has Breakdown. CHICAGO, October 18 (AP). - Eugene V. Debs, socialist, has been a patient at a sanitarium in Elmhurst, a suburb, for a week, it became known today. Physicians said he was suffering from a nervous breakdown. Mrs. Debs and his brother Theodore are at his bedside.

FIGHT AGAINST CHOICE WILL GO TO CONGRESS Organizations Favoring Other Situations Declare Wishes of Citizens Have Been Ignored. The next move in the plan to transfer the Capital's market facilities from their present downtown site will come from the commission merchants, it was indicated today by Maj. Carey H. Brown, chairman of the market site committee of the National Capital Park and Planning Commission. Maj. Brown, together with Lieut. Col. J. Franklin Bell, Engineer Commissioner of the District of Columbia, will confer with members of the commission merchants ' committee, probably today, and inform them officially of the action taken by the National Capital Park and Planning Commission on the market project at their meeting in Fredericksburg, Va., Saturday night. The commission took the stand that as the commission merchants must provide their own places of business they should be given the opportunity of finding land for it in the general area laid down by the commission. The planning body purposely fixed a date by which both the farmers ' market and commission merchants ' sites must be moved in order that the matter would not be permitted to drag by any of the parties concerned. The planning commission's representatives will offer their cooperation to the merchants in trying to decide on one of the three locations laid down by the planning commission. They will make available to the merchants facts and figures which have been compiled showing the railroad facilities, accessibility for automobile and street railway transportation and the distances from which the various products come into the city. Disapproval Is Voiced. While plans were under way for the conference between the planning officials and the commission men, emphatic expressions of disapproval of the commission's action in selecting the Eckington site over the water front and midcity locations-their second and third choices for the marketcame from business and civic interests representing both of these latter locations, with the further promise that they would carry their fight to Congress. At the same time it was explained on behalf of the commission that the commission favored the Eckington site because of the railroad facilities there and the possibility of their development and expressed a preference for it over the water front site, because it would prevent a large amount of trucking from passing through the Mall. The representatives of the commission merchants will be urged by the Government representatives to act promptly in saying which one of the three sites they favor, for information gathered by the special market site committee indicated that the farmers ' line for which provision must be made, and the commission merchants ' line are inseparable. It was said today that there apparently was some confusion in some sources over the use of the term ' farmers market ' in connection with the Center Market. It was made plain today that the commission never at any time had had any idea of moving the farmers who sell at retail outside of the Center Market at this time. These farmers will be allowed to remain until such time as it becomes necessary to remove the Center Market, which the commission has voted against in the city. Most Produce From Maryland. Figures compiled by the market committee from questionnaires sent out to 130 farmers in Maryland and the District of Columbia showed that during the past year they brought into the District produce to the value of $ 360, 000, while questionnaires from 27 Virginia farmers showed that only $ 28, 000 worth of produce came in from that source. This indicated to the commission that the best location would be in the northern section of the city. While not selecting any particular site within the Eckington area, the commission laid down the lines within which the market lines should be shifted and indicated that the Eckington area was generally bounded by K and V streets and North Capitol street and the grounds of the Columbia Institution for the Deaf. The Eckington site was put first in the list because of the figures indicating that the greater part of the shipments came from the North and West, and a study of the ground area showed the possibility of railroad terminal development in an area easily accessible by motor transport from any part of the city. Maj. U. S. Grant, executive officer of the commission, said that the commission has discussed in broad terms the question of eventually getting all of the downtown market facilities located in the Eckington area, but came to no conclusion as yet. He gave it as his personal opinion, however, that eventually the Center Market would be moved to the Eckington area, assuming, of course, that the commission merchants follow the Park Commission's recommendation and move to that section. However, he said, the Center Market undoubtedly would be allowed to remain in its present location for some time and then only would be moved if the patronage demanded such a step. Fight Going to Congress. The fight to locate the new farmers ' market either on the waterfront or on the proposed midcity site will be carried over the heads of the National Capital Park and Planning Commission direct to Congress, where the final decision is to be made, leaders of the Midcity Citizens ' Association and the Southwest Business Men's Association and Southwest Citizens ' Association announced today. The ultimatum resulted from the announcement by the planning commission Saturday night of its selection of the Eckington tract as the preferred (Continued on Page 2, Column 2.)
