The Mexican Republic today completes 116 years of independent life, having achieved its definitive emancipation from Spain after long years of struggles and battles.

The aid Charles III gave the United States in breaking away from England was to cost Spain dearly. After 1780, many thoughtful brows furrowed over the example of a free country on the continent. The French Revolution brought gusts of energy and cries for liberty. By 1794 the first conspiracy, headed by a Mr Guerrero, had been discovered. Around 1799 the affair was repeated more seriously, although Viceroy Azanza foiled the plot by arresting Don Pedro Portillo, leader of what later became known as the failed “revolution of the machetes.” In 1801 the naval officer Francisco Antonio Vázquez reported a similar matter.
These cases had not been dangerous, but they occurred often enough to indicate that the materials were accumulating little by little, and that the idea of independence, though confused, was spreading and slowly germinating, occasionally putting out isolated shoots.

Context
What September 16 commemorates
Mexico’s national anniversary marks Hidalgo’s call to rebellion at Dolores on September 16, 1810, the beginning of the independence war. The paper’s count of 116 years follows that starting point. Its historical essay then looks further back, treating earlier conspiracies and foreign revolutions as the preparation for an uprising rather than imagining independence as a single isolated moment.
Oil connected exports with the public budget
The national profile presents petroleum in three roles: a major product in world markets, a dominant export, and a source of government revenue. Those roles connect overseas demand with the resources available to the state. For a commemorative portrait of an independent republic, the emphasis shifts attention from winning sovereignty to the economic base needed to sustain public institutions.
How a sewer project reached contractors
The La Serena notice made a technical public-works project accessible through a formal tender process. Plans and specifications at a named office gave prospective contractors a common basis for their offers, while a fixed opening time organized the competition. It is a glimpse of sanitation infrastructure being procured through engineering documents and administrative procedures, alongside the page’s grander national histories.

La ayuda que Carlos III prestó a los Estados Unidos para desligarse de Inglaterra, había de costar cara a España. Fueron muchos los ceños pensadores que después de 1780 se contrajeron reflexionando sobre el ejemplo de un país libre en el continente. La revolución francesa trajo turbonadas de impulso y de gritos libertarios, y ya para 1794 se descubría la primera conspiración encabezada por un señor Guerrero; hacia 1799 el caso se repitió con mayor seriedad, aunque el Virrey Azanza hizo abortar el complot, prendiendo a don Pedro Portillo, jefe de la que posteriormente se conoció con el nombre de fracasada “revolución de los machetes”. En 1801 el oficial de la Armada Francisco Antonio Vázquez hizo denuncio en igual sentido.
Los casos no habían sido peligrosos, aunque sí bastante seguidos para dejar de indicar que los materiales se iban acumulando poco a poco, y que la idea de independencia, si confusa, se difundía y germinaba lenta mostrando esporádicamente brotes aislados.
