As we reported earlier, today, September 18, marks exactly 25 years since Professor F. A. H. Schreinemakers took up his chair in inorganic chemistry at the State University here.
A modest man, Professor Schreinemakers has gone abroad to escape the tribute that would otherwise undoubtedly have been paid today to this distinguished son of Leiden University.
Bazaar of the Association for the Fight against Tuberculosis
We may now assume that this is well known. For the sake of the good cause, however, we feel obliged to draw attention already to the formation of another ladies’ committee, chaired by Mrs De Gijselaar–Viruly, with Mrs De Vries–De Vries of Rapenburg 38 as secretary. To replenish the association’s funds, which have been heavily drawn on especially recently, it is preparing a bazaar to be held in the foyer of the Stadsgehoorzaal on October 26, 27 and 28.

A university anniversary as city news
Schreinemakers held a Leiden chair in inorganic and physical chemistry from 1901. The anniversary was consequently part of the university’s institutional life, but the local paper makes it a matter of civic pride too. His absence becomes the story: leaving town to avoid honours reinforces the portrait of a modest scholar while allowing the newspaper to pay the tribute he has declined in person.
How a bazaar supported tuberculosis work
The notice shows a health association relying on civic fundraising to restore depleted funds. A named women’s committee organizes the event, a private address serves as a contact point, and a public hall supplies the venue. Together these details show how voluntary work, social connections and urban facilities could be assembled to finance disease-control activity. The newspaper itself helps by turning a future event into a current appeal.
A local club reaching a national amateur stage
The Dilettantenclub uses its anniversary to convene a national competition. “Dilettante” here refers to amateur theatre, not a judgement that the performers lack ability. Selection among participating associations gives the celebration a competitive structure and connects the Leiden club with groups outside the city. An anniversary thus becomes an opportunity to build a wider theatrical network, rather than only commemorate the club’s own past.

Zooals reeds eerder door ons werd gemeld, is het vandaag, 18 September, juist vijf en twintig jaren geleden, dat prof. dr. F. A. H. Schreinemakers als hoogleeraar in de anorganische chemie zijn intrede deed aan de Rijksuniversiteit alhier.
Eenvoudig man als hij is, heeft prof. Schreinemakers door zich buitenslands te begeven zich onttrokken aan de hulde, welke aan dezen voortreffelijken zoon der Leidsche Universiteit anders op dezen dag ongetwijfeld zou zijn bereid.

Dat mogen wij thans wel als bekend veronderstellen. Maar wel gevoelen wij ter wille van de goede zaak ons verplicht er nu reeds de aandacht op te vestigen dat zich weder een dames-comité heeft gevormd onder voorzitterschap van mevrouw De Gijselaar—Viruly, waarvan mevrouw De Vries—De Vries, Rapenburg 38, secretaresse is en dat voor de versterking van de geldmiddelen der vereeniging, die vooral in den laatsten tijd druk aangesproken zijn, een bazaar voorbereidt, welke zal worden gehouden in den Foyer der Stadsgehoorzaal op 26, 27 en 28 October.

De inschrijving voor de bij gelegenheid van haar 45-jarig bestaan te houden nationalen tooneelwedstrijd is ten volle geslaagd. Aangewezen tot deelname aan den wedstrijd werden de volgende vereenigingen:
