The railway accident at De Vink
Rail traffic between Leiden and Voorschoten resumed in both directions at 8:10 this morning.
For the time being, however, trains are passing the accident site at only 5 kilometres per hour.
Emergency arrangements remained in force during the morning while passengers were being informed; after two o’clock, express trains from Amsterdam C.S. and Rotterdam D.P. were again routed through Leiden.
Local trains between The Hague and Leiden remain cancelled today.
All services are expected to be back to normal tomorrow.

A moment’s silence. Then—exactly three minutes after the signal—the powerful modern fire engine arrived. Its large ladder was removed, and the engine was placed beside the water.
Another moment of suspense among those present, while the firemen worked quickly and calmly. Without a hitch, the ladder was extended and set against the tall Waag building. Its tip reached even above the roof. As the men climbed steadily up the ladder and made their way onto the roof, where they rescued a person in distress—a dummy—by gently lowering it on a rope, the attack on the fire began in earnest. Two jets were supplied from the engine’s tank, immediately followed by water from a hydrant, boosted to a higher pressure by the pump.

The festivities continued this morning with the unveiling of The Sower, made by the sculptor August Falise. The statue stands in the small square in front of the Agricultural College’s main building on Heerenstraat. The inscription reads:
The Sower
From Dutch agriculture
to the Agricultural College.
The funds for the statue were raised by private individuals and agricultural organizations.

Why reopening the track did not immediately restore the timetable
A railway route can become passable before its normal traffic pattern can return. At De Vink, a 5-kilometre-per-hour restriction limited how quickly trains could clear the damaged section, while passenger notices and altered routings still had to be coordinated. Restoring express trains via Leiden and continuing to cancel local trains were separate stages in that process. For readers planning a journey, the distinction determined which services they could actually use that day.
What the fire brigade was demonstrating
The display joined rescue at height with a continuous water supply. The ladder reached above the Waag’s roof while crews began using the engine’s own tank; a hydrant and pump then supplied pressurized water. Presenting the sequence before an audience made the equipment’s value tangible: rapid arrival mattered only if ladders, trained crews and water could be brought into action together. The dummy allowed the public to see how a roof rescue would work.
Why a sower represented agricultural education
The anniversary traced state agricultural education to the government’s takeover of Wageningen’s agricultural school in 1876. Falise’s design connected that institution with the act of sowing: teaching and research spread knowledge that could bear fruit in farming. Contributions from individuals and agricultural organizations made the statue a public expression of that relationship. It placed a figure associated with practical labour in front of the institution devoted to agricultural learning.

Hedenmorgen om 8.10 is het spoorwegverkeer tusschen Leiden en Voorschoten in beide richtingen hervat.
Op de plaats van de ramp wordt evenwel voorloopig slechts met een snelheid van 5 K.M. per uur gereden.
Gedurende de ochtenduren bleef in verband met het op de hoogte brengen van het reizend publiek de noodregeling gehandhaafd; na twee uur werden de sneltreinen van uit Amsterdam C.S. en Rotterdam D.P. weer via Leiden geleid.
De locaaltreinen tusschen Den Haag en Leiden blijven vandaag nog vervallen.
Verwacht wordt, dat morgen het geheele verkeer weer normaal zal zijn.

Onze Brandweer in actie.
Een oogenblik stilte. Toen — precies drie minuten na het gegeven signaal — arriveerde de forsche moderne spuit en werd, ontdaan van den grooten ladder, geplaatst aan den waterkant.
Weer eenige spanning onder de aanwezigen en een vlug en kalm werken der brandweermannen. Zonder eenige stoornis werd de ladder uitgezet en voor het hooge Waaggebouw geplaatst. Het einde richtte zelfs boven het dak uit. Terwijl de manschappen met vasten gang de ladder beklommen en zich naar het dak begaven waar zij een in nood verkeerend persoon (een pop) redden door hem aan een touw rustig te laten zakken, werd de aanval op den brand met groote intensiteit aangevangen met twee waterstralen uit den tank van de spuit, onmiddellijk gevolgd door water uit een brandkraan onder verhoogden druk door middel van de pomp.
Vijftig jaar rijkslandbouwonderwijs — De Zaaier
Vijftig jaar rijkslandbouwonderwijs.
Vanochtend is het feest voortgezet met de onthulling van het standbeeld de Zaaier, vervaardigd door den beeldhouwer August Falise. Het beeld is geplaatst op het pleintje voor het Hoofdgebouw der Landbouwhoogeschool aan de Heerenstraat. Het opschrift luidt:
De Zaaier,
De Nederlandsche Landbouw
aan de Landbouwhoogeschool.
De gelden voor het beeld zijn bijeengebracht door particulieren en landbouw-organisaties.
