Yesterday evening, the former pupils’ association of Mathesis Scientiarum Genitrix held its 16th general meeting in one of the rooms at Den Burcht.

After the minutes had been read and approved without alteration, the secretary, Mr. H. H. Verhulst, delivered a detailed annual report. It showed that association life had not been particularly lively and membership had declined a little again. Even so, the association still has 198 members and 20 donors, numbers many another city organization would envy, especially as its finances are sound.

On the board’s proposal, it was then decided to make another donation of 100 guilders to the Mathesis board. This time it would not go to the fund mentioned earlier, but to a library to be established for M. S. G. pupils. Its foundations have already been laid, and the director has long been working on it. The gift could help meet the cost of compiling and printing a catalogue.
Between train and platform
An accident at Haarlem station yesterday evening ended miraculously well. A passenger trying to jump aboard the already moving train to Amsterdam slipped and fell between the departing train and the platform. Passengers inside immediately pulled the emergency brake, bringing the train to an immediate halt. The reckless passenger proved to be unhurt, and an official report was drawn up against him. The emergency brake had meanwhile become defective, leaving only the hand brakes available. As a result, the train had to travel considerably more slowly and reached Amsterdam 34 minutes late.
Around the League of Nations
Further details are now available: the Netherlands and Colombia were elected to two-year terms on the League Council with 47 votes each, and China with 34. Belgium, Czechoslovakia and El Salvador therefore leave office next year.
Poland had submitted a written request to be declared eligible for re-election when its three-year term ended. Approval required two thirds of the votes cast, excluding blank ballots. The request was granted by 36 votes to 8, with 4 blank ballots.
Several states, including France, Britain and Germany, asked Belgium also to seek a re-eligible seat. The Belgian delegation, however, considered such a candidacy contrary to the agreed [illegible] and declined. It preferred to leave the question open, possibly to raise it again when Belgium’s new one-year term expired.
Context
Alumni support turns into a working library
The association’s donation was aimed at a practical step in creating a school library: compiling and printing its catalogue. Books become useful to pupils when they can find what is available, so the administrative expense was part of access to learning. The meeting also shows how an organization with declining activity could still contribute through sound finances and a continuing membership. Its value to the school was not measured only by the liveliness of its own meetings.
An emergency stop saves a life but changes the journey
The passengers’ intervention stopped the train while a man was trapped beside the platform. The same incident then affected the rest of the service because the train could use only hand brakes. The slower journey connects safety equipment directly to operating speed. Recording both the uninjured passenger and the delay gives the story two scales: a narrowly avoided personal disaster and its consequences for everyone travelling to Amsterdam.
A Council seat had both a term and a future
The League Council’s elected seats did not all offer the same immediate horizon. This report distinguishes two-year terms, the one-year group and Poland’s ability to seek another term after three years. Re-eligibility was itself a separate vote requiring a supermajority. Belgium’s refusal shows that a longer prospective role was also a diplomatic choice: accepting a privileged position could clash with understandings reached during the reform.

Gisteravond hield de Vereeniging van Oud-leerlingen van het Genootschap „Mathesis Scientiarum Genitrix“ haar 16de algemeene ledenvergadering in een der zalen van „Den Burcht“.

Na lezing der notulen, die onveranderd werden vastgesteld, bracht de secretaris, de heer H. H. Verhulst, het uitvoerig jaarverslag uit, waaruit bleek, dat het vereenigingsleven niet bijzonder opgewekt is geweest en het ledental weder iets is achteruit gegaan. Toch telt de Vereeniging nog altijd 198 leden en 20 donateurs, een aantal, dat menig andere stedelijke organisatie haar toch nog zal benijden, te meer daar de geldmiddelen in goeden staat verkeeren.

Hierna werd op voorstel van het bestuur besloten weder een gift van f 100 ter beschikking te stellen van het Mathesisbestuur, ditmaal echter niet tot versterking van het straks genoemde Fonds, maar ten behoeve van een te stichten bibliotheek voor de leerlingen van „M. S. G.“, waarvoor reeds de grond is gelegd en waarvoor de directeur reeds lang in actie is. Deze gift zou dan kunnen dienen als tegemoetkoming in de kosten van het samenstellen en drukken eener catalogus.
Tusschen trein en perron.
Aan het station te Haarlem had gisteravond een ongeval plaats, dat wonder boven wonder goed is afgeloopen. Een reiziger, die reeds in den in beweging zijnde trein naar Amsterdam wilde springen, gleed uit en kwam tusschen den wegrijdenden trein en het perron terecht. Andere reizigers, die in den trein zaten, trokken onmiddellijk aan den noodrem, waardoor dadelijk gestopt werd. Het bleek dat de onvoorzichtige reiziger ongedeerd was. Er werd proces-verbaal tegen hem opgemaakt. De noodrem was intusschen defect geraakt, waardoor alleen nog maar over de handremmen beschikt kon worden. Als gevolg daarvan moest de trein aanmerkelijk langzamer rijden en kwam men met 34 minuten vertraging te Amsterdam aan.

Nader zij nog medegedeeld, dat in den Volkenbondsraad voor 2 jaar zijn gekozen Nederland met 47, Columbia met 47 en China met 34 stemmen. België, Tsjecho-Slowakije en San Salvador treden dus volgend jaar af.
Van Polen was een schriftelijk verzoek ingekomen om het bij zijn aftreden over drie jaar herkiesbaar te verklaren. Voor inwilliging van dit verzoek moest Polen twee-derde van de uitgebrachte stemmen verkrijgen, waarbij blanco stemmen niet meetelden. Het verzoek werd ingewilligd met 36 tegen 8 stemmen en 4 blanco.
Een aantal staten, o.a. Frankrijk, Engeland en Duitschland, verzochten België om zich eveneens candidaat te stellen voor een herkiesbaren zetel. De Belgische delegatie achtte een dergelijke candidatuur echter in strijd met de overeengekomen [onleesbaar] en weigerde op het voorstel in te gaan en gaf er de voorkeur aan om de kwestie open te laten om ze eventueel weer te berde te brengen na afloop van het nieuwe Belgische mandaat van één jaar.
