Los Tiempos’s thousand-peso draw takes place today
TODAY AT 11:30 A.M., THE LOS TIEMPOS NATIONAL-HOLIDAY DRAW WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE COURTYARD OF OUR PRINTING WORKS.
WE WILL RECEIVE COUPONS UNTIL 11 O’CLOCK SHARP, WHEN THE BAG CONTAINING THE ENVELOPES WILL BE SEALED WITH WAX.
THE 500-PESO PRIZE WILL GO TO THE FIRST COUPON DRAWN FROM THE BAG BY A MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC. THE SAME PROCEDURE WILL BE USED FOR THE REMAINING 200- AND 100-PESO PRIZES.
ALL READERS WHO WISH MAY ATTEND THE DRAW, WHICH WILL BE STRICTLY SUPERVISED.
Context
A survivor who embodied naval memory
Zegers served aboard the Esmeralda at Iquique in May 1879, supplying ammunition during the battle. After the ship sank he was taken prisoner and later exchanged, continuing his naval service. That history explains why his obituary leads with the ship rather than simply his final rank. The planned attendance of senior military officials turned the funeral into a public act of remembrance for a man associated with one of Chile’s defining naval battles.
A holiday closure still had payment obligations
Closing bank offices did not automatically erase payments falling due on that date. The joint notice separates the public closure from collection work assigned to the appropriate departments. Approval by the finance minister made the arrangement authoritative, while the exception helped customers understand what still had to be dealt with. It shows how a holiday timetable required coordination between public permission and the continuity of financial transactions.
A newspaper promotion becomes a public event
The draw invited readers into the printing courtyard and gave a member of the audience the role of drawing coupons. Sealing the bag at a fixed time and allowing spectators made the procedure visible. Those details helped the promotion cultivate trust as well as attract entries. The newspaper was presenting itself as a place readers could visit and participate in, not only a printed product they bought.
