- Council elections on Wednesday
- Peltzer: My world record
- Spain’s withdrawal
The paper makes the League Council election conditional on agreement over procedure, rather than announcing an unconditional timetable. It pairs that diplomacy with Peltzer’s first-person account of an unexpected world-record run and a report of Spanish newspapers endorsing withdrawal from the League while recognizing the importance of Germany’s admission.
Three legible headline-and-opening passages, covering League Council elections, Peltzer’s race account and Spanish press reactions. The remaining column text is preserved as uncorrected OCR candidates, not presented as reviewed full-page text.

League Council elections planned for Wednesday, if rules are agreed
When will the disarmament conference be held?
GENEVA, September 13.—This morning was dominated by the tension surrounding the new elections to the Council. As the Assembly’s bureau decided at midday today, these elections are now to take place at a plenary session of the League Assembly on Wednesday afternoon, provided the electoral rules can be adopted at the same sitting without lengthy debate.
Peltzer describes his unexpected 1,500-metre world record
Dr. Peltzer describes his 1,500-metre race—the surprise victory over Nurmi—still far from exhausted.
I had yet to prove that I belonged to the top international class over 1,500 metres as well. Now I have been able to do so much more easily than people probably expected. In this contest against Nurmi and Wide, I had actually intended to be content with beating Wide and to save a victory over Nurmi for a later occasion. A world-record run was, of course, the furthest thing from my mind, since I had not even trained particularly for the 1,500 metres.
Spanish press reactions to withdrawal from the League
MADRID, September 13.—Spain’s withdrawal from the League of Nations is approved in all the commentaries published so far. Their prevailing note is that Spain loses nothing, while the League loses quite a lot. Nevertheless, the great majority of newspapers present Germany’s admission as an event of world-historical importance. An article in “Debato” says the League increasingly regards the Rhine and the Vistula as what matters most: it has become a European league rather than a world league.
Context
Council seats meant a say in international security
The League Assembly gave each member state one vote, but the Council was a smaller body with permanent and elected members. It handled security questions, disarmament plans and mandates. Elections therefore determined which countries would participate in that smaller forum. In 1926 the number of non-permanent seats rose to nine. The tension over rules in the lead article concerned access to diplomatic influence, as well as the scheduling of a ballot.
A record described from inside the race
Peltzer’s account makes the scale of his surprise understandable by naming two different ambitions: beating Wide seemed a sufficient immediate goal, while defeating Nurmi could wait. The race overturned that personal ranking of what was possible. Keeping his first-person voice lets the reader follow the gap between preparation, expectation and performance; a result table alone would lose the confidence and astonishment of the athlete speaking just after his achievement.
Whose interests did a world league represent?
The Madrid dispatch records a criticism of the League’s priorities: the Rhine and Vistula stand for the European questions that Spanish commentators felt were receiving disproportionate attention. Yet the same press could regard Germany’s entry as a major event. Approval of Spain’s departure and recognition of Germany’s importance were thus compatible positions. Their combination reveals dissatisfaction with the distribution of influence inside an institution that claimed a worldwide role.

Wann ist Abrüstungskonferenz?
Genf, 13. September
