- Deputy Atilio Susi savagely beaten by Fascist mobs
- Lucetti watched Mussolini for a month to carry out the attack
- Mine owners reject a nationwide basis for settling the coal strike
Crítica leads with alleged Fascist violence against Atilio Susi, describing detention, coerced acknowledgment of political contacts and beating with clubs. A separate police-based report identifies Gino Lucetti after the attack on Mussolini. Below these Italian stories, a London dispatch locates the coal-strike impasse in disagreement over a nationwide settlement.
The Susi assault report is joined across the photograph; the Lucetti and British coal reports are selected opening passages. The cartoon, further commentary and other dispatches are not treated as additional eyewitness evidence.

Report of Fascist violence against socialist deputy Atilio Susi
Deputy Atilio Susi savagely beaten by Fascist mobs.
A BRUTAL SCENE. (Associated Press.)
ROME, the 13th.—A group of Roman Fascists, having learned that Socialist deputy Atilio Susi was in contact with Césare Rossi and Carlo Bazzi, who are currently conducting an anti-Fascist campaign in France, where they have gone into voluntary exile, broke into his home in this capital. Discovering that he was at his country house in Santa Marinela, they took several cars and succeeded in seizing Susi. They maltreated him until he admitted that he was indeed in contact with Rossi and Bazzi.
The Fascists then demanded that he hand over any documents in his possession. When Susi insisted that he had none, they beat him with clubs.

ROME, the 13th.—According to police accounts, Gino Lucetti, alias Ermete Giovannini, who carried out the attack on Mussolini, had possessed since 1920 the bomb he threw on Saturday at the car carrying the head of government. Lucetti is 26 and says he concealed his real identity to avoid causing trouble for his family, who live in Italy.

COOK’S EFFORTS ARE FRUITLESS. (Associated Press.)
LONDON, the 13th.—An authoritative source states that the committee of the Mine Owners’ Association which has examined the miners’ proposals to end the strike will inform the Government this afternoon that it is impossible to accept the condition the workers regard as essential: that the agreement should apply nationally. The colliery owners, a body affiliated to the association, refuse to accept this.
Context
Fascist power extended through organized intimidation
Mussolini’s appointment as prime minister in 1922 was followed by the consolidation of a one-party dictatorship. The attack on Susi shows how political coercion could operate outside a courtroom: a group searched for an elected opponent, seized him and used violence to demand information and papers. His parliamentary position did not protect him in the account. The incident illustrates the use of organized intimidation against the networks connecting opponents inside Italy with activists abroad.
Exile connected Italian opposition to France
Rossi and Bazzi appear in the report as opponents carrying on a campaign from France. Their contact with Susi mattered to the attackers because political opposition could continue across a border even while its domestic space narrowed. The demand for documents suggests an effort to trace those connections. This gives the violence a purpose beyond a street assault: it targeted communication between people still in Italy and those able to campaign from exile.
Why a national coal agreement mattered
The British coal dispute concerned wages and working hours, but also the scale at which those terms would be negotiated. Owners pressed for district settlements, which workers feared would expose them to further pay cuts. A national agreement could preserve a common negotiating position across coalfields, while district bargaining divided that question among local industries. The disagreement reported here was therefore about the structure of bargaining as well as the immediate terms for returning to work.

ROMA, 13.
