Politika

The page links domestic representation with international politics. A column criticizes the absence of active business representatives from parliament; a political report describes the announcement of a Democratic Community in Sarajevo. Alongside them, a Rome dispatch reports demonstrations, guards at opposition newspaper offices and the alert status of Fascist militia after an attack on Mussolini.

Three opening passages: economic representation, a parliamentary alliance and the response to the attack on Mussolini. Later paragraphs and other columns are outside this reading.

Translation

After the congress of business representatives

These congresses receive too little attention, although they are enormously important. The speech by Milutin Stanojević, one of our serious, sober-minded and composed businessmen, was particularly significant. His observation deserves special emphasis: our National Assembly has been left without active businessmen because towns have been excluded from the right to return deputies. We welcome that remark, for we were the first to point out this fact in these columns.

A new Democratic Community announced in Sarajevo

A new development has occurred in the political situation. In Sarajevo, Davidović and Dr. Spaho announced that the Democrats and the Yugoslav Muslim Party are forming a joint parliamentary representation called the Democratic Community! Although it was known that the Democrats and Muslims had long formed a single bloc and were merely waiting for the most suitable moment to announce their unity officially, the news from Sarajevo nevertheless caused a small sensation. We should not forget that when Davidović left Belgrade, little was said about this even within Democratic circles.

Rome demonstrations after the attack on Mussolini

Demonstrations in Rome.
ROME, September 12.—Apart from the events in Milan, order has not been seriously disturbed in Rome or throughout Italy. Public demonstrations took place in Rome. Opposition newspapers were publicly named in Piazza Colonna. Strong guards stand by the offices of opposition newspapers and outside the Russian legation. The Fascist militia is on the strictest alert.

Context

Who could speak for economic life in parliament?

The congress column connects political representation to practical experience in business. Its complaint is that the rules shaping the Assembly have pushed urban commercial voices out of the chamber. That is why a businessman’s speech matters to this editorial: it becomes an argument about whether the legislature contains the experience needed to address the economy. The paper openly places itself on one side by claiming it raised the issue first.

Cooperation becomes a named parliamentary bloc

The Sarajevo announcement gives a formal name to cooperation between the Democrats and the Yugoslav Muslim Party. A joint parliamentary organization could express a common position while retaining the separate political identities indicated by those party names. The surprise described here concerns the timing and publicity of that step as much as the underlying relationship. Parliamentary politics depended not only on relationships among leaders but on when their supporters learned how those relationships would be organized.

Fascist public order included party mobilization

Mussolini became prime minister in 1922 and subsequently built a one-party dictatorship. The response to the attempt on his life must be read within that transformation of Italian politics. The dispatch places public demonstrations, guards at opposition newspaper offices and readiness of the Fascist militia alongside its assurance that order largely held. “Order” here could coexist with the mobilization of a governing movement and intense attention to its opponents.
