Leidsch Dagblad

Leidsch Dagblad shows ordinary municipal business alongside the social aftermath of the railway accident. Leiden's forthcoming budget is available for public inspection. The planned October revue is canceled because its creator and director Hageman was seriously injured after taking an earlier train to attend a rehearsal. A hospital passage describes a royal visit, growing crowds and roses for patients. The selected texts show how an accident reached civic entertainment and public expressions of sympathy.

Budget

Leiden’s mayor and aldermen hereby give public notice that, in accordance with Article 203 of the Municipalities Act, the budget of local revenue and expenditure for 1927 has been submitted to the council. It has been deposited at the municipal secretariat for inspection by anyone and is available in print at cost.

The 3 October revue is canceled, as reported

The celebrations of the 3 October Association.
As already reported, the 3 October revue has been cancelled. It cannot go ahead because of the railway accident. Its designer, creator and director, Mr Hageman, was so seriously injured. In his great enthusiasm and tireless efforts to make it as complete a success as possible, both for the 3 October Association and for his own society, Litteris Sacrum, the accident struck him in the very midst of his work. To find time to attend a choir rehearsal in Leiden in person, he took a train earlier than usual—with, alas, such a tragic result.

The railway accident near De Vink

Even those usually in the know had received no advance word of the visit, so almost no spectators were present. Only the presence of police inspector Duval and several officers suggested that something unusual was about to happen. Scarcely had the royal visitors entered when people streamed in from all directions. The police cordoned off the hospital grounds.
[…] were received by the medical director, Dr Maas, the head of surgery, Professor Zaayer, and Professor Van der Hoeve. They then visited the patients, who are doing well in the circumstances. A little time was spent at each bedside, and the Queen spoke briefly with every patient, each of whom was presented with a small bouquet of roses.

Context

How residents could examine the city’s finances

The budget notice tells residents how to obtain the document that would set out the city’s income and spending for the coming year. Submission to the council was accompanied by public inspection at the secretariat and the sale of printed copies at cost. A newspaper notice thus connected a formal municipal procedure to practical access: readers were told where they could examine the figures for themselves, rather than having to rely solely on the council’s discussions.

Why a railway accident disrupted the 3 October celebrations

Leiden’s annual 3 October festivities commemorate the city’s relief from a Spanish siege in 1574. The association named in the article has organized the celebrations since 1886. Hageman’s injury therefore affected a performance within a major civic commemoration, as well as his own theatre society. His journey to a choir rehearsal shows how the disaster reached into the voluntary cultural work on which such celebrations depended.

A royal visit made the injured visible to the wider public

The hospital report follows the visit from an almost empty entrance to a gathering crowd, then moves inside to individual bedsides. Its focus is the encounter between the Queen and the injured: conversation and flowers turn patients into the subjects of personal attention. For readers following the disaster, the visit provided a public expression of concern while the medical staff’s account brought news of recovery.
