- The first exhibition in Burgenland
Neue Freie Presse couples Stresemann's satisfaction at Geneva with a domestic demand for lasting settlement of public-service pay. The German minister credits supporters of League membership with overcoming obstacles and hopes for cooperation based on understanding. The pay editorial argues that recurrent disputes undermine the stability claimed for Austria's finances. A Burgenland exhibition report, meanwhile, presents Eisenstadt's event as a demonstration of regional resources and future possibilities.

Stresemann on his impressions of Geneva
A great easing of international tensions.
Telegram from our special correspondent. GENEVA, September 12.—Foreign Minister Dr. Stresemann kindly received your correspondent and spoke to him as follows:
“To your question about the impression Friday’s proceedings left upon me, I can only reply: a feeling of profound satisfaction. The difficulties that had to be overcome on the road to the outcome at Geneva were very great, both at home and in negotiations with other countries. The route led, amid obstacles of every kind, from Locarno through the March meeting in Geneva to September. In the end, however, all those who wanted to see Germany in the League of Nations worked with all their strength towards that goal. This gives me hope that they consciously sought, as we did, cooperation within the League—cooperation which by its very nature can only aim at mutual understanding.”
Strike threats without end
The demands of the Technical Union.
VIENNA, September 13.—Find a lasting solution! This wish forces itself upon anyone who has followed the course of negotiations with public employees in recent years. We rightly praise the stability of our currency and the absolute security of our monetary system. The budget has, gratifyingly, been spared the effects of the economic crisis. Yet one of the most important elements of budgeting—and therefore of economic organization in general—the pay of public employees, is left almost to chance: to the outcome of painful disputes, with constant risks of confrontations that inflict the gravest damage on the authority of the state.
This condition might just have been tolerated in the period of currency collapse. It might have been endured with regret as an after-effect of inflation while stabilization remained incomplete. Today, this back-and-forth, this endless confusion and constant torment have simply become intolerable. The disorder must end if we are to get down to work at all, to normalize production and achieve steady progress.
The first exhibition in Burgenland
Eisenstadt as the exhibition venue. From our special correspondent.
This first exhibition in our Burgenland is an achievement in itself. Speak on opening day with the people of Eisenstadt who have worked so energetically for it, and they say it was a bold gamble. Yet anyone surveying what has been accomplished here can hardly agree. Quite the opposite: the treasures this region holds have been crying out to become known to a wider public at last. It can no longer be tolerated that this youngest child of Austria, almost at Vienna’s gates, should remain trapped in a Sleeping Beauty slumber. We must reflect and recognize what Austria possesses in Burgenland. This exhibition marks a great step forward, both as a gauge of the rise Burgenland has already made and as a measure of what Austria can expect from it in the future.
Context
Germany takes a place at the negotiating table
Germany’s admission changed its relationship with the League from an outside power’s negotiations to participation inside the organization. The Assembly included all members on equal voting terms, while the Council handled a narrower set of seats and important security functions. Stresemann’s reference to the difficult journey from Locarno to Geneva explains his satisfaction: entry offered a continuing arena in which agreement could be pursued, not merely a single diplomatic ceremony.
A stable currency did not settle public pay
Austria introduced the schilling in January 1925, replacing the crown at 10,000 crowns to one schilling after a programme of monetary and budgetary stabilization. The salary editorial was written against that recent achievement. Its frustration comes from the contrast between a stabilized monetary framework and recurrent uncertainty over public employees’ pay. The author wants lasting settlement because wages connect the state’s accounts to the daily operation of public services and production.
An exhibition introduces a region to the capital
The correspondent addresses readers who live near Burgenland but may know little of what it offers. Calling it Austria’s youngest child makes recognition of the region a family obligation; the Sleeping Beauty image suggests potential waiting to be awakened. The exhibition’s purpose is therefore larger than displaying objects. It is presented as an opportunity to change Vienna’s view of a neighbouring region and to make regional development part of Austria’s future.
