Leidsch Dagblad of 29 September 1926 reported staff appreciation, a crowded reception and an evening gathering for Sanders's anniversary. Its theatre critic judged most of the visiting English Players mediocre and considered Dutch companies at least as good at performing Shaw. The crime report described an unemployed shoemaker's fatal assault at a fair and the ensuing arrests and witness questioning. A report of a furniture-factory fire followed.

a word of thanks for the many expressions of appreciation received from the staff today, together with the wish that the harmony prevailing among the staff would continue.
From half past eleven until half past twelve, a very well-attended reception was held, at which many people offered their congratulations. Besides the many floral arrangements already mentioned, which had been delivered to the factory, the management also received a large number of written and telegraphic congratulations.
It was a splendid day for the management, one whose memory will long be cherished.
May the energetic director, still in the prime of life, also live to witness the firm's centenary.
This evening the celebrations continue with a convivial gathering at the Stadsgehoorzaal. [?]

The English Players.
“You Never Can Tell,” a comedy in four acts by G. B. Shaw.
When a foreign company visits our country, one naturally expects something special. There must, after all, be a reason for such a foreign tour: either exceptional acting, such as that of Moissi or Bassermann, or something distinctive, such as the cabaret performances of “Der Blaue Vogel.”
The few English companies we have had here have so far never managed to offer anything special, and last night the English Players were no different. Certainly, it was not bad, but Dutch companies perform Shaw's comedy “You Never Can Tell” at least as well, and in many respects even better.
What pleased us most last night was that this was not a star company: it was at least an ensemble, which prevented any great disparities. From this one can already infer, to some extent, that most of the performers were mediocre. In our opinion, only Stirling's Mr. Valentine rose somewhat above that level; unfortunately, he was slightly hoarse. On the other hand, a few fell below mediocrity.
The choice of play was a happy one: at least we now saw a thoroughly English work performed by an English company. Some even consider “You Never Can Tell” Shaw's best comedy, but although we might be willing, as regards that judgment
The Murder at Noordwijkerhout.
GENERAL NEWS.
The murder at Noordwijkerhout.—In a large proportion of the copies printed yesterday, we were still able to carry a brief report of the cowardly assault on the 38-year-old organ-grinder M. J. S. in a café at Noordwijkerhout, from which he died shortly afterwards.
S. was a shoemaker by trade in Amsterdam and, being unemployed, had temporarily hired himself out as an organ-grinder to the proprietor of a merry-go-round. That was how he came to be at the Noordwijkerhout fair on Monday evening.
During a break, the man wanted to relax in Mr. van D.'s café, but the farmers harassed him until he left. When he tried again, five people struck him on the head with a wooden clog and kicked his chest in. The man only just managed to get away, but collapsed unconscious on the Kerkweg.
Doctors Romeijn and de Wit diagnosed a cerebral haemorrhage.
Without regaining consciousness, the man died at the police station. The body was taken to the University Hospital in Leiden for examination.
On Tuesday morning, officials from the public prosecutor's office arrived from The Hague with the public prosecutor, Mr. J. de Rooy van Doesburg.
The van D. brothers have already been arrested and sent to The Hague.
A third person, named L., a boatman by trade, has fled to Amsterdam, where the police are trying to trace him.
Late last night, various witnesses were still being questioned at Noordwijkerhout Town Hall.

An industrial anniversary within Leiden's civic world
The celebration presented the factory as a community bound by appreciation and continuity: employees expressed their appreciation, management thanked them, and the report voiced the wish that harmony among the staff would endure. The crowded reception and planned Stadsgehoorzaal gathering gave the anniversary a setting beyond everyday factory work. The firm's connection with municipal life also had a personal basis. Joseph Sanders combined factory leadership with service on Leiden's council between 1920 and 1927 and, for a time, as alderman. His overlapping industrial and municipal roles place the report's celebration of the director within Leiden's civic world, while its reciprocal expressions of appreciation show how the anniversary publicly presented relations within the firm.
What a visiting English company had to offer
For this Leiden critic, foreign touring required an artistic distinction that nationality alone could not supply. Dutch performances of Shaw provided the benchmark; ensemble consistency earned qualified praise, but exceptional acting remained the test. The preference for an English company performing an English work therefore coexisted with confidence in domestic theatre. A contemporary announcement of an international literary theatre in Vienna also placed the English Players among visiting foreign ensembles. That wider touring setting makes the review's opening challenge concrete: an imported company had to justify its place through something audiences could not already obtain at home.
From a murder report to questions of responsibility
The newspaper's murder heading and graphic account preceded the judicial sorting of responsibility. Jan Duivenvoorden's 2020 local history describes seven people appearing in court and receiving comparatively light punishments for unnecessary violence because direct responsibility for the death could not be assigned. It also describes questions about alcohol and the handling of the injured man by a doctor and police officer. This later reconstruction shifts attention from the report's collective accusation to individual conduct and causation. The distinction matters here: identifying participants in an assault did not, in that account of the proceedings, establish who was directly responsible for the victim's death.

woord van dank, voor de vele blijken van waardeering heden van het personeel ontvangen, daarbij den wensch uitsprekend dat de goede harmonie, die tusschen het personeel bestaat, zal blijven voortduren. Van halftwaalf tot halfeen werd een zeer druk bezochte receptie gehouden waarbij velen hun gelukwenschen kwamen aanbieden. Behalve de vele bloemstukken boden reeds genoemd, die aan de fabriek waren bezorgd, bereikte de directie ook een groot aantal schriftelijke en telegrafische gelukwenschen. Het was voor de Directie een mooien dag waarvan de herinnering lang zal blijven bewaard. Moge het den wakkeren directeur thans nog in de kracht van zijn leven gegeven worden ook nog het honderdjarig bestaan der Zaak te beleven. Hedenavond wordt het feest voortgezet met een gezellige bijeenkomst in de StadsGehoorzaal. [?]

" The English Players. " You never can tell ", comedy in 4 acts van G. B. Shaw Wanneer een buitenlandsche troep ons land bezoekt, verwacht men uit den aard der zaak daarvan iets bijzonders. Er moet toch een reden zijn voor zoo'n buitenl. tournée. Hetzij dan dat dat bijzonders bestaat in bijzonder spel, gelijk b. v. van Moissi of Bassermann, hetzij uit iets aparts als b. v. de klein-kunst van " Der Blaue Vogel ". De enkele Engelsche gezelschappen, die wij hier hebben gehad, wisten tot dusver nooit iets bijzonders te geven en gisteravond is het met " the English Players " niet anders geweest. Zeker, het was niet kwaad, maar de Nederlandsche gezelschappen spelen Shaw's blijspel " Je kunt het niet weten " zeker even goed, zelfs in menig opzicht beter. Het gelukkigste verschijnsel van gisteravond vonden we nog, dat het geen stergezelschap was, dat het ten minste een ensemble was, waardoor geen groote gapingen ontstonden. Hieruit valt al eenigszins te concludeeren, dat het gros der executanten behoorde tot de middelmaat. Daarboven verhief zich o. i. alleen eenigszins mr. Valentine van Stirling, die helaas ietwat heesch was, doch aan den anderen kant bleven er ook eenige onder de middelmaat. Een gelukkige greep was het stuk: We zagen nu althans een zuiver Engelsch werk van een Engelsch gezelschap. Sommigen achten " You never can tell " zelfs Shaw's beste blijspel, doch al willen we dit oordeel
De moord te Noordwijkerhout.
GEMENGD NIEUWS. De moord te Noordwijkerhout. - Met een enkel woord konden wij in een groot gedeelte van onze oplaag gisteren nog melding maken van de lafhartige mishandeling van den 38-jarigen orgeldraaier M. J. S. in een café te Noordwijkerhout, aan de gevolgen waarvan deze spoedig daarop overleed. S. was van beroep schoenmaker te Amsterdam en had zich, daar hij werkloos was, tijdelijk verhuurd bij een houder van een draaimolen als orgeldraaier. Zoodoende was hij Maandagavond op de kermis te Noordwijkerhout. In een vrij uurtje wilde de man zich verpoozen in het café van den heer van D., doch de boeren sarden hem er uit en toen hij het nogmaals wilde probeeren werd hij door een vijftal personen met een klomp op de hersenen geslagen en de borstkas ingetrapt. De man kon zich nog net uit de voeten maken, doch viel bewusteloos op den Kerkweg neer. De doctoren Romeijn en de Wit constateerden een bloeduitstorting in de hersenen. Zonder tot bewustzijn te zijn gekomen is de man in het politiebureau overleden. Het lijk werd ter schouwing naar het Academisch Ziekenhuis te Leiden overgebracht. Dinsdagmorgen arriveerde het parket uit Den Haag met den Officier van Justitie, mr. J. de Rooy van Doesburg. Reeds werden de gebroeders van D. gearresteerd en op transport gesteld naar Den Haag. Een derde persoon, L. genaamd en schipper van beroep, is gevlucht naar Amsterdam, waar de politie hem tracht op te sporen. Gisteravond laat was men op het Raadhuis te Noordwijkerhout nog bezig verschillende getuigen te hooren. Brand te Waddinxveen. - In den afgeloopen nacht is de groote meubelfabriek van de N. V. voorheen Modderkolken Dijs te Waddinxveen, benevens twee
