BOULOGNE-SUR-MER, 29.—This morning the waters of the English Channel washed the naked body of a man onto the beach. When the body was identified, it proved to be that of the young Spanish swimmer Luis Rodríguez de Lara, who belonged to a distinguished family in Madrid society.
Young de Lara had decided to cross the English Channel secretly and, with that aim, entered the water several days ago without anyone accompanying him; nothing had been heard of him since.
This is the first tragedy recorded among the swimmers

GENEVA, 29.—The announcement that Britain’s Foreign Secretary, Mr. Austin Chamberlain, and Italy’s Prime Minister, Mr. Benito Mussolini, will hold a conference in Italy tomorrow has prompted all kinds of comment among senior League of Nations officials.
It is believed that the meeting will discuss the problems of Tangier and Abyssinia.
It is understood that the Abyssinian question has been settled between Britain and Italy, with Abyssinia being induced not to persist in protesting to the League against the alleged Anglo-Italian pressure aimed at obtaining concessions in Abyssinia.

LONDON, 29.—Official circles announce that the conference which Foreign Secretary Mr. Chamberlain and Italian head of government Mr. Mussolini will probably hold tomorrow has been arranged at the latter’s special request.
The same circles say that the meeting will take place at a port on the Italian coast within a reasonable distance of Rome, with Pisa or Civitavecchia thought likely to be chosen.

The Veracruz dispatch shows news continuing to circulate despite a break in the city’s communications. It reports that the National Telegraph lines to Veracruz were out of service, yet identifies Tampico as the route by which cablegrams about disabled power plants and sunken ships arrived. Separate dispatches from Jalapa describe prolonged rain, the Santiago River’s overflow and two deaths. Readers therefore received a regional picture assembled from messages traveling through different places. The distinction matters: the failure of the reported telegraph connection did not mean that all news from the affected area had stopped.
What an accompanying boat provided
The emphasis on Rodríguez de Lara entering the water alone matters because organized attempts could provide substantial support. A 2026 Smithsonian retrospective describes Gertrude Ederle’s August 6, 1926 crossing: she prepared to follow the tides, used grease for warmth and wore watertight goggles. Her coach, father and sister accompanied her by boat, supplying food, water and encouragement. This example illustrates practical support available during a crossing in the same season. Rodríguez de Lara’s unaccompanied departure, as reported by Crítica, meant that he lacked such an escort; the report does not describe the precise circumstances of his drowning.
