Context
What the Northern Expedition sought
The Northern Expedition was a campaign to reunify a China divided among warlord authorities. Its name describes an advance from a southern base. Reports of its growing strength therefore concerned the possible reordering of national power, not simply the fortunes of a single provincial army.
Why Wu Peifu’s position mattered
Wu Peifu was one of the military leaders resisting the southern forces. An American diplomatic report of September 1 already described a serious setback and retreat. The later headline about his flight thus appears against a developing loss of military ground, rather than introducing an isolated personal escape.
A city as a measure of military progress
The separate Nanchang headline turns the campaign into a concrete territorial event. Placing a leader’s flight beside a city’s occupation gives two measures of changing power: the fate of a commander and possession of a place. Both could make a distant war intelligible to readers following it from Korea.
