Context
War debts survived the peace
The peace treaty did not erase loans taken out by the Allies during the war. France remained a debtor while also expecting reparations from Germany. The series’ third installment turns to that continuing problem: victory and a peace settlement did not automatically settle how the war would be paid for.
Debt repayment depended on a wider chain
