Evening Star

The fight report describes judges dismissing competing contractual efforts to stop the Dempsey–Tunney match, clearing its last stated legal obstacle. In Florida, recovery workers face sanitation, evacuation and the search for uncounted dead; the selected passage reports compulsory typhoid vaccination for those remaining. A Berlin dispatch presents German financial opinion that French plans to raise money against German repayments may disappoint, despite a welcome for diplomatic conciliation. These are reports and assessments made before the fight and while relief and financial negotiations remain unsettled.

132,000 expected at fight tonight; court barriers lifted

Few wars have required more diplomatic maneuvers, negotiations and ultimatums than this duel, but the path to its consummation was clear when the application for an injunction to stop the fight was dismissed this morning by the unanimous opinion of three judges in Common Pleas Court. The court’s decision removed the last legal obstacle confronting the bout. Two injunction suits, brought by B. C. Clements, Chicago promoter, who claims a prior contract for Dempsey’s services, were dismissed. One was aimed to restrain promoter Tex Rickard and the other the Sesquicentennial Exposition from conducting the title match.

Typhoid threat in hurricane area; more dead found

Sanitation, movement of refugees out of the storm area and efforts to locate and recover the bodies of the uncounted dead today occupied the attention of workers endeavoring to rehabilitate the southeastern Florida coast section hit Saturday by a hurricane. Every effort was being made to get into the district medicines and serums needed to prevent a serious epidemic of disease, and in an effort to prevent sickness Davie and Moore Haven have been ordered evacuated by all except workers needed to clean up or search for bodies. All workers or persons remaining in the district are required to be vaccinated against typhoid.

German bond sale proposal doomed

BERLIN, September 23.—If Premier Poincaré of France believes he can utilize German railway and industrial bonds to provide funds whereby he will be enabled to ratify the Bérenger debt agreement with the United States, he is showing a lamentable lack of financial understanding, according to German bankers and financial interests with whom the correspondent has talked.

The Germans welcome the Thoiry agreement as a wonderful and unhoped-for relief and give all credit to Premier Poincaré and Foreign Minister Briand for a real conciliatory, friendly spirit. But if, as reported, Germany’s consent is expected to an immediate marketing of a slice of German industrial bonds, which means that world investors would be asked to lend money to creditor nations with German repayments as security, the French are liable to be deceived.

Context

The business behind a championship fight

Dempsey had held the world heavyweight title since 1919. A contest involving such a champion was a major commercial event, with promoters competing over contractual rights. The injunction suits threatened the organization of the match itself: legal control of the event had to be settled before the fighters could meet.

Relief enters a second emergency

After the September 18 hurricane, recovery involved more than repairing damage. The evacuation orders and sanitation work show authorities trying to prevent illness while bodies were still being recovered. People needed shelter and care, but remaining in the damaged settlements was itself being treated as a public-health concern.

Turning future reparations into present cash

The bond proposal tried to use expected German payments to raise money immediately for creditor countries. That connected France’s debt to the United States with Germany’s obligations under the postwar financial system. The bankers’ objection concerned the market’s willingness to finance the arrangement, even when diplomatic reconciliation was welcome.
