The value of teaching English lies in being able to use it. This book adopts the most advanced methods of foreign-language instruction. Drawing on things within the surroundings of teachers and pupils, it uses direct and oral methods, applying lessons as occasions arise. It therefore stimulates abundant interest and readily produces practical results.

From September 1 of year 15, telephone charges between Beijing, Tongxian, Xiangshan and Tangshan will be uniformly changed to 3 jiao in silver currency.

The Shijie Ribao supplement is edited by Dr Liu Bannong, professor at Peking University, and many of its contributors are among the accomplished scholars of our time. Each bound volume gathers a month’s contents into one book. Its printing and binding are both exceptionally fine, entirely unlike the crude format of ordinary bound old newspapers. Each volume has about 120 pages and more than 150 pieces, with rich contents that give equal weight to literary expression and enjoyment. Every young person should have a copy for reading outside class.
Context
Learning English through familiar situations
The textbook makes practical use its selling point, connecting speech to things teachers and pupils encounter around them. This placed method, rather than simply the quantity of vocabulary, at the centre of the sales pitch. Educational publishing was already an established business: the Commercial Press’s history records English-learning books among its early publications. The advertisement shows that competition also concerned how a language should be learned.
Turning a newspaper supplement into a book
The bound-volume advertisement promises a different reading life for material that first appeared in a daily newspaper. A month’s writing could be kept, browsed and read outside school in a carefully produced volume. Liu Bannong’s university title and the contributors’ scholarly standing lend authority, while the emphasis on attractive printing and enjoyable writing broadens the appeal beyond formal study.
A shared charge for several telephone connections
The telephone notice standardizes the price across the named places and states exactly when the change takes effect. That combination was useful to callers who otherwise had to understand a route-specific tariff. It also shows the newspaper acting as a practical interface with a communications service: readers learned not just that telephones existed, but what using particular connections would cost.
