Princess Astrid’s engagement to Crown Prince Leopold
According to Aftonbladet, the engagement of Crown Prince Leopold of Belgium and Princess Astrid will probably not be announced until Tuesday, at a gala dinner at the palace. The reason no official confirmation of the rumours has been given is, the newspaper reports, that they wished to await the King’s return to the capital. The King arrives in Stockholm on Monday morning.
Terrible natural disaster in Florida
News has arrived from Jacksonville, Florida, that a terrible hurricane has struck southern Florida. Miami’s waterfront has been completely levelled, and great damage has been done at Palm Beach. Accurate information is impossible to obtain, as all telephone and telegraph connections have been severed.
A private radio message received here says that 75 people have been killed and that material damage amounts to $100 million. The major telegraph company Western Union has received an unconfirmed message from one of its stations reporting 27 deaths and damage of $10 million.

Control without a ban
The editorial offers a third possibility between prohibition and a free market: removing private profit from spirits sales through a monopoly. Vinmonopolet already existed, having been established in 1922. A later government history records that, after the 1926 vote against prohibition, spirits sales came under the monopoly in 1927. The argument therefore concerns how to retain public control while allowing a product to be sold again.
A Swedish princess entering Belgium’s royal family
Astrid’s engagement linked a Swedish princess with Belgium’s heir to the throne. That cross-border setting explains why an Oslo newspaper followed news from Stockholm and why the timing of a palace announcement mattered.
