Paul Smith’s, N.Y., September 14.—AP—President Coolidge opposes a $560,000,000 reduction in federal taxes at the coming short session of Congress, as urged by Senator Simmons, Democrat of North Carolina, considering such a step unwarranted by present conditions.
With the government running on its present margin between expenditure and income, the President believes any such reduction in the immediate future might require an extensive and perhaps inadvisable readjustment of arrangements for disposing of the huge national public debt. At the same time, he favours reducing taxes as rapidly as they can be brought down. He also favours paying off the public debt as speedily as possible, consistent with wise public financing.

An ordinance providing for the closing of Scott Street between Lawrence and McDonough Streets, for the purpose of providing a playground for Sidney Lanier High School, was adopted Tuesday morning by the city commission in session at the city hall.
The closing of the street will provide a need long felt by the institution, it was said, and will connect the high school building with the old University Club building, recently purchased by the city board of education and remodeled as an annex to the school. Work of closing the street will begin in the near future, according to the city commissioners.
A petition was presented the city commission some time ago by the city board of education to close the street. A like petition, signed by approximately sixty property owners in the vicinity, was read before the meeting Tuesday.
The commission adopted an ordinance extending the forty-five-minute parking limit on Montgomery Street from Lee to Catoma Streets, to become effective as soon as the street is properly marked and warning signs posted. This action was the culmination of a petition signed by 28 Montgomery Street merchants asking that the parking limit be extended.
As no protests were received for sanitary sewers on Chilton and Davidson Streets, the commission ordered that bids for the project be advertised. An ordinance for the paving of sidewalks on Hannon Street between Mildred Street and Clayton Park was also introduced. No protest date was set.

Mexico City, September 14.—AP—The search for Jacob Rosenthal, a well-to-do American from Woodmere, Long Island, has proved futile. He was kidnapped by bandits on Sunday while returning by car to Mexico City from Cuernavaca. The others in the party—Jack Zahler, a prominent American resident of Mexico City, his wife, and Joseph Ruff, Mr Rosenthal’s son-in-law—were robbed but allowed to continue their journey.
Zahler and Russ set out yesterday with a picked squad of Mexican soldiers to trace the bandits. They returned after vainly entering the dense woods near […], where the outrage occurred, and spending hours searching fruitlessly for the missing man and his captors.
“The old man’s whereabouts and plight are a complete mystery,” said Zahler. “That region is wild, almost impenetrable. It seems to me possible for bandits to hide there indefinitely without being found.”
Fifteen suspected bandits have been arrested near […], which is under martial law. Every resident is being sternly questioned by the military to locate the bandits or their accomplices. No word has been received from either Rosenthal or the bandits. Under orders to get the bandits dead or alive, federal troops and crack mounted police detachments from Mexico City continued throughout the day to scour the woods and mountains of the wild country where the American is hidden.
Ruff thinks he was able to identify two suspects as members of the band that robbed him. Zahler says he could not identify anyone positively, remarking: “All those Indians look alike. I decline to be responsible for a man’s death by saying I identified him when I was not certain.”
Mrs Zahler is proceeding to Cuernavaca and will try to identify one or more of the arrested men.
