In memory of Carolus Clusius
As already announced, a committee has been formed to commemorate the 400th birthday of a celebrated botanist who also worked in Leiden, although his birthday fell on February 18.

In 1592 the governors of Leiden University, through his friend Jan van Hogelande, succeeded in persuading Clusius to come to the Netherlands to head the botanical garden with the title of honorary professor, a substantial annual salary, and exemption from teaching duties.
For his part, even before coming in person, he sent an extensive collection of valuable seeds and placed his skill, experience and wide knowledge at our garden’s disposal.
Appointed professor of botany in 1593, he held that office until his death in 1609.
A Leiden department store
Our city, too, now has an establishment that can stand comparison splendidly with those in the Netherlands’ largest cities. We mean the majestic premises of N.V. formerly A. Waals on Haarlemmerstraat.
Construction began in October 1924. Across a frontage of more than 30 metres, a tall wooden fence concealed what was happening behind it.

To give some idea of the business, the firm employs about 180 people, including seventy-five saleswomen and salesmen.
The lighting is excellent, by day and by night. Heating uses a combined system of steam and hot air. The shops are kept warm with hot air, dispensing with radiators; because the warm air flows outwards, there is never any trouble with draughts.
Everything needed to construct and furnish these buildings was made, or at least supplied, by manufacturers and suppliers in our own country.
We advise all our readers to be there at tomorrow’s opening, to see and admire this new store at once.
The railway accident near De Vink
All kinds of suppositions about the cause of the fatal accident are being voiced from many quarters. We shall not discuss them further now, believing it best to let the committee of inquiry speak first and await its report. Once that report appears, we may well compare it with the judgements now being tossed out so boldly—even by people unfamiliar with the place!
Context
Why Clusius belonged to Leiden’s civic memory
Clusius was the Leiden botanical garden’s first prefect and brought major tulip collections to the Netherlands. His work grew through travel, correspondence and exchanges of plants, so the seeds he sent before arriving represented a scholarly network as well as a collection. The anniversary celebrates that international knowledge becoming part of a local institution. Leiden could claim him not simply as a famous resident, but as someone who helped make the city a centre of botanical study.
Why the department store’s heating and lighting mattered
The opening report sells an experience as much as a building. Good lighting makes goods easier to inspect, while warmth without bulky radiators or draughts promises a comfortable visit. The staff numbers suggest organized service on a larger scale, and the emphasis on domestic suppliers turns commercial expansion into local and national pride. These details explain why a shop opening could become a story about the city’s modernity.
Why the accident produced a dispute over expertise
A fatal railway accident creates immediate pressure to identify responsibility, but a reliable explanation depends on knowledge of the site and the sequence of events. The newspaper defends the inquiry’s authority against confident public speculation. Its final jab at people unfamiliar with the location shows that the argument is also about who is entitled to pronounce judgement. The promised later comparison would make today’s commentators answerable to the investigation’s findings.

De nagedachtenis van Carolus Clusius.
Zooals reeds is medegedeeld, heeft er zich een commissie gevormd om den 400sten geboortedag van een beroemd kruidkundige, die ook in Leiden heeft gewerkt, te herdenken, hoewel den dag van diens geboorte viel op 18 Februari.

In 1592 gelukte het Curatoren van de Leidsche Hoogeschool, door tusschenkomst van zijn vriend Jan van Hogelande, Clusius te bewegen naar Nederland over te komen om aan het hoofd te staan van den botanischen tuin onder den titel van professor honorarius, tegen een aanzienlijke jaarwedde en onder de voorwaarde, dat hij vrijgesteld zou worden om onderwijs te geven.
Zijnerzijds zond hij, voor hij persoonlijk overkwam een uitgebreide collectie kostbare zaden en stelde verder kunde, ondervinding en uitgebreide kennis aan onzen plantentuin ter beschikking.
In 1593 tot hoogleeraar in de kruidkunde benoemd, vervulde hij dit ambt tot zijn dood in 1609 toe.
Een Leidsch Warenhuis.
Zoo heeft dan ook onze stad een inrichting gekregen, welke de vergelijking met soortgelijke inrichtingen in Neerlands’ grootste steden glansrijk kan doorstaan. Wij bedoelen het majestueuze pand van de firma N.V. voorheen A. Waals aan de Haarlemmerstraat.
In October 1924 werd met den bouw begonnen en over een breedte van ruim 30 Meter verborg een hooge houten schutting voor het oog, wat daar achter te doen was.

Om van het bedrijf een denkbeeld te verkrijgen deelen we mede dat de firma circa 180 personen in dienst heeft, waarvan 75 verkoopsters en verkoopers.
De verlichting is prima, zoo wel bij dag als bij avond. De verwarming geschiedt door een gemengd systeem van stoom en heete lucht. De winkels worden op temperatuur gehouden door heete lucht waardoor men geen radiatoren noodig heeft, terwijl men, omdat de verwarmde lucht naar buiten dringt, nimmer last heeft van tocht.
Alles wat voor het tot stand brengen van deze gebouwen en de aankleeding noodig was, werd vervaardigd althans geleverd door fabrikanten en leveranciers in ons eigen land.
Wij raden onze lezers en lezeressen morgen bij de opening op het appèl te zijn om deze nieuwe zaak dadelijk te kunnen zien en bewonderen.
Het Spoorwegongeluk bij De Vink.
Van tal van zijden worden allerlei veronderstellingen geuit over de oorzaak van het noodlottig ongeval. Wij zullen daarop thans niet nader ingaan, van oordeel, dat het beste is de commissie van onderzoek eerst aan het woord te laten en haar rapport af te wachten. Misschien zullen wij na het verschijnen van dit rapport nog wel eens vergelijkingen maken met de thans zoo boudweg daar neergeworpen oordeelvellingen, w.o. zelfs van niet ter plaatse bekenden!
