Diario La Nación

This page of La Nación, dated 6 October 1926, followed the Argentine and Uruguayan football delegations as they travelled to Santiago for the South American Championship. The paper described a crowd and committees of young ladies with bouquets greeting the international train at Los Andes, a meal at the Hotel Suramericano, and a special carriage hired by the Federation and attached to the express. It reported that at 3 p.m. Chilean time, on Argentine territory, delegation heads, officials of the South American confederation's Permanent Office, journalists and players received warm embraces, and that a large crowd at Mapocho Station welcomed the visitors, naming players such as Andrade, Scarone and Bidoglio.

The reading follows the image dateline of 1926; the OCR gives 1928 by mistake. Many columns are cut off at the tile edges, so lines lose their first words, and the translations mark these gaps with ellipses. Handwritten facsimile greetings and photographs were not transcribed, and the main headline and decks are only partly visible. None of the selected passages mentions the 'causa reglamentarista', and the commentary does not cover it.

Context

The 1926 championship the delegations were travelling to

The welcome this page describes came just before the tournament began. Chile hosted the 1926 South American Championship from 12 October to 3 November 1926, so the paper's report, dated 6 October, caught the visiting teams six days before the opening match. All matches were played at the Estadio Sport de Ñuñoa in Santiago, which explains why the journey ended at Mapocho Station in the capital and not in another city. Brazil withdrew before the start, leaving five of the six confederation members to compete. The paper traced the journey from the international train's arrival at Los Andes to the special carriage, hired by the Federation, that took the visitors on to Santiago.

The South American confederation whose officials travelled with the teams

The paper lists the Deputy Director and the Secretary of the Permanent Office of the South American Football Confederation among those embraced on Argentine territory, alongside the heads of the delegations. That confederation, known today as CONMEBOL, dated from 9 July 1916, when the associations of the teams playing in the first South American Championship met and founded it. The 1926 tournament was the tenth South American Championship for the confederation's members, and the presence of confederation officials in the travelling party shows that the body accompanied its member teams to the host country.

How the players named at Mapocho fared in the tournament

The page names players such as José Nazzasi, Héctor Scarone and José L. Andrade, and among those cheered at Mapocho it lists Andrade, Scarone and Bidoglio. Scarone in particular played a large part in the tournament that followed. On 28 October Uruguay pulled clear at the top of the table after Scarone scored five goals in a 6–0 win over Bolivia, and Uruguay were then crowned champions for the sixth time after beating Paraguay 6–1 in their final match. The Uruguayan squad greeted with flowers at Los Andes went on to win the championship.

Uruguay's divided football and the Consejo Provisorio of 1926

The Uruguayan delegation came from a country whose domestic football was split. In 1922 the Federación Uruguaya de Football (FUF) was established as a dissident body from the official Uruguayan Football Association (AUF), and the two bodies ran separate tournaments. After attempts at reunification failed, the government intervened, and in 1926, with the aim of joining the AUF and the FUF, it set up a provisional championship run by an Interim Council, the Consejo Provisorio. Because the AUF did not organise that competition, the association has not recognised it as official. The national team that arrived in Chile in October 1926 thus represented a football community still in the middle of this government-brokered reconciliation.
