Context
A new landmark in a new urban dream
The Biltmore opened in January 1926, only months before this newspaper appeared. Its construction was part of the ambition to make Coral Gables an impressive destination. The photographed tower therefore represented a very recent investment in the city’s future.
Seville as an architectural reference
The caption directs the viewer to the Giralda as the model for the tower. That reference brings the prestige of an older European city into the presentation of a Florida hotel. A modern development could acquire a sense of historical grandeur through its chosen architectural forms.
The city imagined through one building
Under “The cities that disappear,” a single hotel tower stands for a much larger urban landscape.
