Leidsch Dagblad

The Leidsch Dagblad's local news page of 22 October 1926 carried three substantial reports. Dr. D. J. Steenhuis took up a lectureship in radiology at Leiden University with an inaugural address arguing that X-ray diagnosis had outpaced X-ray therapy and that the biological action of radiation on tissue was still not understood. Cinema owner J. Diks appealed to the city council against a permit condition forbidding any change to the facade of Breestraat 31, which he had bought to turn into a first-class cinema, insisting that the street was now a shopping street and that he would only merge two windows. And at the Leiden branch of the Instituut voor Arbeidersontwikkeling, Mr. De Klerk of The Hague urged workers to learn Esperanto as a neutral auxiliary language for international labour contacts, drawing on his own experience as a trade-union board member.

On the Action of X-Rays on Normal and Diseased Tissue

CITY NEWS. ON THE ACTION OF X-RAYS ON NORMAL AND DISEASED TISSUE. This afternoon Dr. D. J. Steenhuis, of this city, took up the post of lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine at the State University, to teach radiology, with an address entitled "On the action of X-rays on normal and diseased tissue". Radiology, the speaker began, is a branch of the medical system formed only a relatively short time ago, a system that already comprises a great many specialisms, while radiology has extended its influence to almost all branches of medical science. When Röntgen made his sensational discovery in 1895 while experimenting with a Hittorf tube, he certainly understood the significance it could have, but he will hardly have foreseen the great influence it has acquired for medical examination and treatment. The speaker then recalled the great advances in technique, and briefly dealt with the great progress and possibilities of diagnostics. The speaker made clear that various organs can already be made visible by all kinds of methods and that many more improvements will certainly be achieved, so as to be able to diagnose various disease processes. As regards the application of X-rays in the treatment of the sick, this is not yet at the same level as diagnostics, the speaker said, although various conditions have been treated with good results. Many studies have already been made, the speaker noted, of the influence that the various rays have on normal tissue. This influence differs for each type of tissue, while the various cells of one and the same type in turn show different sensitivity, probably depending on nuclear divisions. We must know this sensitivity for treatment, the speaker said. Various attempts have been made to increase it for treatment in certain cases, but so far with little success. Many theories have already been put forward about the action of X-rays, but a physico-chemical explanation alone is for the time being inadequate. At a given dose of X-rays that attacks diseased tissue, the normal organs are in general spared. The influence on the endocrine glands, however, still needs further study. Of diseased tissue, only the carcinomas can be mentioned. The histological changes caused by X-rays are known, but we do not yet know their biological influence, the speaker said. A big question is whether X-rays act directly to kill the cell, or whether there

Petition to the Council

PETITION TO THE COUNCIL. Mr. J. Diks, cinema owner at Hoogewoerd 49 in this city, has appealed to the Council against a decision taken by the Mayor and Aldermen [?] on 23 Sept. last, by which the petitioner is permitted to convert the property he has bought at Breestraat 31 in this city into a cinema theatre, subject among other things to the condition that the front facade of the property shall undergo no change. It is because of this condition that the petitioner is appealing, with the request that the said condition be withdrawn. He bought the property with the aim of having it converted into a first-class theatre. Neither the buyer nor even the seller knew that, in the event of any conversion, the required permit would carry the condition that nothing on the front facade could be changed. Why, the petitioner asks, did the Society for the Care of Monuments not inform the then owner of the building in good time that, in the event of a conversion, the Society would ask the Mayor and Aldermen to include the objectionable condition in the building permit? Then the buyer would surely not have walked into it. It would have been better if that Society had bought the building itself; then it might well have been preserved for posterity. Besides, many people who, by their education in architecture and their sense of beauty, are competent to pass judgement on the preservation of this facade see in the building anything but a monument requiring the protection of the above-mentioned Society. It goes without saying that if the petitioner had had the slightest suspicion that the Mayor and Aldermen would attach the described condition to the building permit, he would not have proceeded to buy the property. But who nowadays will buy such a house as a private residence? Nobody, surely. On the Breestraat large buildings are bought only to establish large businesses in them, and conversion will then have to take place anyway. Imagine that the house had been bought to set up one or two shops in it: the ground-floor front would then certainly have to be removed entirely, there is no other way, and could a beauty commission, which (unless we are mistaken) does not officially exist in Leiden, then simply ask the Mayor and Aldermen not to permit a conversion into shops? That surely is out of the question. Besides, the Breestraat has become a shopping street with traffic; have not almost all the town mansions already been converted into shops, cafés and offices? If the facade, according to the submitted building plan, were to undergo such a change that one could speak of an "ugly" facade, then it goes without saying that the Mayor and Aldermen would refuse a permit to convert, but in the present case there is no question of that. The only change the front facade will undergo is that the two windows on either side of the outer door will be made into one window; otherwise this facade will undergo no change, though it will be entirely sprayed with the so-called sandblast, whereby it will regain its fresh natural sandstone colour. In the neglected state in which the facade now is, it is decidedly a blot on the Breestraat, and it looked as though no improvement would come if the petitioner had not bought the building; it would have become nothing more than a large "billboard". Just look at how the facade already looks now. Is it not better, then, to make a small change to the ground-floor front than to have to look at it, perhaps for years still, as an unaesthetic billboard? The petitioner, who since 1 Sept. last has had to pay interest on the capital for which the building was bought, would be terribly harmed if the aforementioned condition were maintained. It is for this reason that he politely requests that at the next meeting of the Council the building permit granted be amended so that the front facade may be altered, as on the relevant -

Institute for Workers' Education

INSTITUTE FOR WORKERS' EDUCATION. Before a small but attentive audience, Mr. De Klerk of The Hague spoke last night in the Volksgebouw for the Leiden branch of the above-named Institute on "Esperanto in the service of the Labour Movement." After the chairman, Mr. Tjalsma, had opened the meeting and introduced the speaker with a few words, the latter began by remarking that it sometimes seems as though there is an antipathy towards Esperanto among workers. The sigh "must we learn still more languages" points to a failure to understand the significance of Esperanto. Mr. De Klerk related how centuries ago the need for a world auxiliary language was already felt and attempts were made to create one. At that time, however, people confined themselves to a world written language. In 1880 came Volapük, the first attempt at an international spoken and written language. In use, however, it gave rise to many mistakes, and moreover its foundation was unsound. In 1887 the Warsaw eye doctor Dr. Zamenhof published his system under the name "Esperanto", i.e. "the hoping one". With this system, according to the speaker, it is possible to establish the bond between the workers of the different countries that great minds such as Marx, Engels, Bakunin and Proudhon always wanted. After pointing out how Dr. Zamenhof came to his system and relating some interesting details from his life, the speaker contrasted the dull international congresses, where interpreters have to be used, with the congresses where Esperanto is used as the vehicle of thought. By way of illustration he told how years ago Prof. Van Rees and the Rev. Schermerhorn went abroad together to attend a congress. The former went to Switzerland, where the teetotallers were meeting, the latter to Kassel. The teetotallers worked with interpreters; in Kassel Esperanto was used. Prof. Van Rees finished earlier and came to collect the Rev. Schermerhorn in Kassel, and there he heard the closing speech. He was amazed at how all those present were evidently able to follow the speaker perfectly, and, under the impression of the tedious sessions he had sat through at his own congress, he informed himself more closely about Esperanto and soon afterwards was able to write to the Rev. Schermerhorn in that language. The speaker emphasised how the world auxiliary language is of the greatest significance especially for the working-class child, who learns not a single modern language. Mr. De Klerk had come to Esperanto when he was elected to the board of his trade union and came into contact with foreign fellow tradesmen. He faced the choice of learning several languages or the world auxiliary language. After devoting himself to Esperanto for one year he was able to hold a conversation with a Muslim from Persia, and when the Esperantists met internationally in The Hague in 1920, he did not need to miss a single word of what was said. In international circles the idea has repeatedly been put forward of adopting one of the modern languages as the international language and learning it from childhood alongside the mother tongue. The speaker pointed to the difficulties this would cause. One would get a privileged nation, while the danger would arise that one's own language would be oppressed. With Esperanto this is not the case. It modestly remains the auxiliary language for international contact. More and more the significance of Esperanto is being recognised. The League of Nations does not yet use it, but has decided that if it adopts an auxiliary language, that language will be Esperanto. In Finland and Russia it is supported by the government. During the war Germany sacrificed millions for propaganda in Esperanto. Numerous are the papers and periodicals that appear in this auxiliary language. In America the Bible has been translated into Esperanto. The speaker ended with the warning that one need not begin the study for one's pleasure. It is dry. But to anyone who has the definite aim of wanting to "get by" internationally, he can fully recommend Esperanto. Mr. Pelder, one of those present, showed with his correspondence how he had exchanged ideas with someone from Leningrad by means of Esperanto. The chairman, closing the meeting, first of all thanked Mr. De Klerk for his simple and clear address and further announced that for a possible study club the board very probably has a leader who

Breestraat 31 and the cinema that stands there today

J. Diks's petition turned on a single building, Breestraat 31, which he had bought to convert into a "first-class" cinema and whose front the Mayor and Aldermen wanted left unchanged, at the urging, as Diks describes it, of the Vereeniging voor Monumentenzorg. Diks argued that the Breestraat had already become a busy shopping street whose town mansions had mostly been turned into shops, cafés and offices, and that his plan altered only the ground-floor windows while sandblasting the sandstone front back to its natural colour. The address houses a cinema today: Trianon, described today as a cosy cinema in Leiden's Breestraat, is listed at Breestraat 31. The page does not report how the council decided the appeal, and the building's history between 1926 and the present is not documented here, so what can be seen is that the address Diks meant to turn into a cinema houses one today, not the outcome of the facade dispute.

A young institute for workers' education

The Instituut voor Arbeidersontwikkeling that hosted De Klerk was a young body in October 1926. The Eye Filmmuseum's database describes it as a socialist workers' organisation and dates its founding to 1924, so the Leiden branch meeting in the Volksgebouw took place barely two years into the institute's existence. An evening lecture on a practical subject such as Esperanto, followed by the chairman's plan to set up a study club with a leader, fits the adult-education purpose its name announces. The same record gives 1940 as the year of its liquidation, states that it was re-established after the Second World War, and notes that in 1959 it was renamed the Nederlands Instituut voor Volksontwikkeling en Natuurvriendenwerk (NIVON).

Esperanto among Dutch workers before 1926

De Klerk came from a city where workers had organised around Esperanto early. The first Esperantist workers' groups were founded between 1905 and 1908 in a handful of cities, The Hague among them, and in 1911 the Netherlands, together with Germany and Czechoslovakia, gained a separate Esperantist workers' association. The argument he pressed hardest in Leiden, that the working-class child who learns no modern language needs an auxiliary tongue most, matches the case the movement made for itself: workers in the international labour movement, most of whom knew only their mother tongue, had an even greater need for a common language than scientists or business people. His own route into Esperanto, through election to his union board and contact with foreign colleagues, follows the same pattern.

The international workers' Esperanto movement in the mid-1920s

By the time of the Leiden lecture the workers' wing of Esperanto had its own international organisation. Alongside the 1921 World Esperanto Congress in Prague, the Liberiga Stelo group, with 80 participants from 75 countries, held its first world conference and renamed itself the Sennacieca Asocio Tutmonda (SAT). The organisation was divided: in 1924–25 SAT went through a small crisis when some anarchist members, objecting that its publications would not carry articles opposed to communism or the Soviet Union, founded their own organisation. Mr. Pelder's correspondence with an Esperantist in Leningrad belongs to this period of cross-border contact between workers. De Klerk's other statements, that the League of Nations had already chosen Esperanto as any future auxiliary language and that Finland and Russia supported it officially, remain the speaker's assertions as the paper reported them.

OVER DE WERKING DER ROENTGENSTRALEN OP HET NORMALE EN ZIEKE WEEFSEL

STADSNIEUWS. OVER DE WERKING DER ROENTGENSTRALEN OP HET NORMALE EN ZIEKE WEEFSEL. Hedenmiddag aanvaardde dr.
