Crítica's page of 22 October 1926 carried an Associated Press cable from London reporting that Australia's government was said to be behind a proposal, due before the Imperial Conference, to build seven fast refrigerated steamers that would cut the Southampton–Fremantle run to 22 days and let Australian meat compete with Argentina, which the cable said supplied more than two-thirds of Britain's meat. On the sports side, Agencia Austral relayed the Asunción paper La Tribuna's blunt verdict on Paraguay's crushing defeat by Argentina at the South American Football Championship in Santiago: a weak defence and forward line, players in poor physical condition and a magnificent Argentine side. A further dispatch listed the theatre gala, banquet, reception and garden party planned in Santiago for the visiting delegations.

The Australians Want to Push Argentina Out of the British Meat Market
This is the aim behind [?] the proposal submitted to the Imperial Conference for the construction of seven fast steamers fitted with modern refrigeration
FROM SOUTHAMPTON TO AUSTRALIA IN 22 DAYS
Associated Press, LONDON, 22. — It is said that the proposal, to be studied by the Imperial Conference, to build seven fast steamers for service between Australia and England comes from the government of Australia, which is seeking to carry meat to England in a way that can compete with Argentina, the latter country now supplying Great Britain with more than two-thirds of the meat it consumes. The planned steamers will be equipped with the most modern refrigeration system, and their speed will allow them to shorten the crossing by ten days, making the run from Southampton to Fremantle in 22 days.

THE ARGENTINE TEAM IS OUTSTANDING
To this and to the defective make-up of the Paraguayan team, Asunción attributes the defeat
"LA TRIBUNA" SPEAKS
(Agencia Austral) ASUNCIÓN, 22. — "La Tribuna," referring to the defeat of the Paraguayan side in its first match against the participants in the Ninth South American Football Championship, says: "There is no doubt that we lost because our representation is not up to the mark. Our team is weak, above all in defense and in the forward line. If to the make-up of our team, defective in itself, one adds the poor physical condition of the boys and the magnificence of the Argentine side, one arrives at the naked reason for our defeat. Of course we expected defeat, but not in so resounding and crushing a fashion.

Context
Australia's refrigerated-ship plan and the 1926 Imperial Conference
The London cable was filed three days after the Imperial Conference opened: the gathering of dominion prime ministers ran in London from 19 October to 23 November 1926 and is remembered above all for the Balfour Declaration, which set out that the dominions were equal in status. The AP item reports the seven-steamer plan only as something "said" to originate with the Australian government, and its details — seven ships, 22 days to Fremantle, ten days saved, and Argentina's share of more than two-thirds of British meat consumption — are the cable's own figures. For Crítica's readers the point was clear enough: a rival supplier was trying to gain ground in the market of the United Kingdom, which was Argentina's principal economic partner in the 1920s and 1930s.
Britain's 1926 drive to sell Empire produce
The Australian scheme fitted a wider effort that year to make dominion produce more competitive in Britain. In May 1926 the Colonial Secretary, Leo Amery, set up the Empire Marketing Board to promote intra-Empire trade. Besides its poster campaigns the board financed research, and in 1931 Walter Elliot listed £160,000 granted to the Low Temperature Research Station at Cambridge and its allied cold store at East Malling — the kind of refrigeration science on which long-haul meat shipments depended. Later historians, however, judge that during its brief existence the board failed to raise Britain's imports from the Empire, which suggests that publicity and research alone did little to dislodge established suppliers such as Argentina.
From the 1926 rivalry to Ottawa and the Roca–Runciman Treaty
Australia's ambition to displace Argentine meat bore fruit only after the economic shock that followed the Wall Street crash of 1929, when the United Kingdom took measures to protect the meat market within the Commonwealth. At the Imperial Preference negotiations in Ottawa, bowing mainly to Australian and South African pressure, Britain decided to cut imports of Argentine beef severely. Argentina's answer was the Roca–Runciman Treaty, signed in London on 1 May 1933. Read with that later history in mind, the 1926 cable records an early, still tentative stage of the dominion pressure that would eventually reshape Argentina's meat trade with Britain.
Paraguay's 8–0 opening defeat by Argentina
The defeat La Tribuna lamented was Paraguay's first match of the tournament, played in Santiago on 20 October 1926, which Argentina won 8–0 with four goals from Gabino Sosa; that scoreline explains the Asunción paper's words "resounding and crushing." Its blame on a weak defence and forward line is the paper's own diagnosis. The dispatch calls the event the Ninth South American Championship, while the modern count lists the 1926 tournament as the tenth such championship among CONMEBOL members. Paraguay recovered quickly: on 23 October, the day after this page appeared, it beat Bolivia 6–1.
How the Santiago championship ended
Only five of the six CONMEBOL members took part in 1926, because Brazil withdrew before the start. The Argentine side La Tribuna called magnificent did not win the title: the day after Paraguay's win over Bolivia on 23 October, Uruguay beat Argentina 2–0 to draw level at the top, and Uruguay went on to secure its sixth championship by defeating Paraguay 6–1 in its last match. The Santiago dispatch on 22 October therefore describes the hospitality offered to the delegations midway through the tournament, including a federation banquet held back until the Paraguayan delegation had arrived.
