- Canaro Debuts in New York the Day After Tomorrow
- In Madrid, the Orange Conference
This partial reading of the Argentine daily Crítica for 10 October 1926 takes three Associated Press cables from a single page. One reported that a violent rainstorm had flooded almost all of Málaga: the overflowing Arroyo del Calvario swamped Calle Victoria, overturned vehicles and cut tram and railway lines, and a subheading noted one victim. A second announced that the "Argentine" bandleader Francisco Canaro would open at the El Mirador cabaret in New York after his success in Paris, with the first night open only by special invitation. A third described King Alfonso opening a government-organized National Orange Conference in Madrid, where Levante growers and exporters trading with Northern Europe were to seek ways of sustaining the orange industry and its exports.
This edition translates three Associated Press cables from one page of Crítica dated 10 October 1926; the OCR gives the year as 1925, but the printed dateline reads 1926. Each excerpt begins or ends with fragments of neighbouring items (a racehorse note, a fashion caption, the opening of a cable on bullfighting regulations), which are translated as they stand, and [?] marks illegible words. The page's lead Italo-Yugoslav story, the Malbrán story and other items were not excerpted, and clipped left-edge letters in the Málaga cable may affect some wording. The background sources cover Canaro's 1926 New York trip, Málaga's flood history and the growth of the Levante orange trade, but they do not establish how New York received Canaro, the details of the 1926 Málaga flood, or what measures came out of the orange conference.

ONE VICTIM
(Associated Press) MÁLAGA, 10. – A violent rainstorm that broke over this city has flooded the streets. It may be said that a veritable torrent fell upon the capital and its surroundings. As a result of the storm, the Arroyo del Calvario overflowed, flooding Calle Victoria and overturning several vehicles in the Plaza Constitución and other streets. The tram and railway lines also suffered breakdowns and damage, and were cut by the storm, which reached a radius of several kilometers around the city.

CANARO DEBUTS IN NEW YORK THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW
The well-known "Argentine" musician will appear with his orchestra at one of the most famous cabarets in that city, "EL MIRADOR"
(Associated Press) NEW YORK, 10. – Next Tuesday the well-known Argentine musician Francisco Canaro will make his debut at the Mirador, one of the best-known cabarets in New York, thus opening the season that Broadway had awaited so eagerly. The Argentine orchestra, conducted by F. Canaro, begins preceded by a great publicity campaign, and comes as the continuation of the resounding success obtained in the cabarets of Paris. F. Canaro will sing special numbers from his thoroughly Argentine repertoire every night. Such is the interest in hearing and seeing the Argentines that the night of the F. Canaro orchestra's debut at the Mirador will be accessible only by special invitation.

THE ORANGE CONFERENCE OPENED IN MADRID
King Alfonso presided over its inauguration, which took place in the Palace of Communications
TECHNICAL MEETINGS
(Associated Press) MADRID, 10. – King Alfonso today presided over the inauguration of the National Orange Conference, which, organized by the government, is being held in the Palace of Communications of this capital. The purpose of the conference is to find the means conducive to maintaining the industry and export of these fruits. Attending are delegations from the principal orange-producing regions of the Levante, as well as from export houses connected with most of the nations of Northern Europe. The conference will last several days, with technical meetings held in the various sections, arriving at conclusions that will be submitted to the government for study, so that it may adopt, by means of laws, as many as it considers possible.
Context
Canaro's Paris-to-New York tour of 1925–26
The cable presents the New York date as the sequel to a Paris triumph, and the biographical record bears out that sequence. Canaro had debuted in Paris with his own orchestra in 1925 and was successful enough with local audiences to remain in Europe for about a decade; he took the same orchestra to New York the following year. His younger brother Rafael, who had joined the band in Paris as double bassist and saw player, travelled to New York in 1926 with the same company, which had included pianist Fioravanti De Cicco, drummer Romualdo Lomoro and singer-guitarist Teresita Asprella, and returned to France after that tour. The statements that Broadway had awaited the season "so eagerly" and that the opening night would be by invitation only are the Associated Press cable's own claims, made in a report that itself notes the heavy advance publicity. The biographies record no verdict on how New York audiences received the band; what they do record is that Canaro's great successes in the following years came as he took his tango show through Deauville, Madrid and other cities of Spain and Latin America.
Why the cable puts "Argentine" in quotation marks
Francisco Canaro was not Argentine by birth. He was born in San José de Mayo, Uruguay, in 1888 to Italian immigrant parents, who moved the family to Buenos Aires when he was less than ten years old, at the end of the nineteenth century. He grew up and built his tango career in the Argentine capital, but he became a naturalized Argentine citizen only in 1940, fourteen years after this cable. The quotation marks around "argentino" in the subheading could signal that gap between birthplace and reputation, or simply mark the word as the label of a musical style; the page does not explain them. In the body of the cable the Associated Press calls him an Argentine musician without qualification and stresses his "thoroughly Argentine" repertoire, suggesting that in 1926 the Argentine identity of tango was itself the selling point of the New York engagement.
Málaga's recurring floods
The flood in this cable belongs to a long local pattern. In the sixteenth century, after Málaga passed to the Crown of Castile, the forests of the Guadalmedina basin above the city began to be cleared for cultivation, and the loss of woodland left the slopes exposed to torrential Mediterranean rain. Floods, known locally as "riás", recurred in the city's history well into the twentieth century. A major modern example was the great flood of 23 September 1907, when the Guadalmedina could not absorb an intense downpour; King Alfonso XIII, the same monarch who appears on this page opening the orange conference, then ordered works to prevent such floods, and in 1908 the Málaga engineer Manuel Jiménez Lombardo submitted the project for the El Agujero reservoir. A broader project to correct the basin was drawn up, but its execution only began in 1929, so in October 1926 Málaga still lacked that protection. The 1926 cable, for its part, attributes the flooding of Calle Victoria not to the Guadalmedina but to the overflowing Arroyo del Calvario.
How the Levante orange export trade grew
The National Orange Conference dealt with an export trade that had grown up in the Valencian Levante over roughly a century and a half. In 1781 a priest, Vicente Monzó Vidal, planted the first citrus field in the Ribera district, at the Bassa del Rei, and orchards then spread to Alzira and other towns of the Ribera and along the whole Mediterranean coast. France became the first foreign country to consume oranges from Carcaixent at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and in 1848 a businessman set up premises in Carcaixent to make orange packing cases, an early step towards large-scale shipments. By 1926, according to the cable, exporters dealing with most of Northern Europe sat alongside the Levante growers at a government-organized meeting opened by the king. The cable states the aim as "maintaining" the industry and its exports, which frames the meeting as defensive, though it names no specific threat; it says only that the conference's conclusions would go to the government, which would turn into law as many of them as it considered possible.
