Context
Building a common economic framework
The South Slav state created in 1918 inherited the task of bringing an enlarged territory into common economic institutions. The central bank expanded its operations in 1920, and the dinar stabilized in 1925. An economic program in 1926 addressed the next question: how that framework would support the country’s development.
Who was Field Marshal Stepa?
Stepa Stepanović was a leading Serbian commander of the Balkan Wars and the First World War, especially associated with Cer in 1914. His rank and first name were enough to evoke that military reputation. A feature about his “paradise” thus invited readers to see a celebrated commander in a more personal setting.
A public hero in a private world
Calling the place his “paradise” contrasts the marshal’s public identity with a setting of personal satisfaction.
