Context
The American conditions for joining the Court
The U.S. Senate supported participation in the World Court only with reservations. One concerned advisory proceedings involving American interests without U.S. consent. The question was how a new participant’s conditions could fit a court already shared by other states, so the existing members’ response mattered.
The long dispute after the general strike
The May general strike lasted nine days, but the coal miners’ conflict over wages and hours continued. A fresh standstill in September meant another obstacle after months without settlement. The eventual return in November would come on terms less favorable to the miners, illustrating the stakes of prolonged bargaining.
An American result on a Dutch front page
Tunney’s ten-round points win took the heavyweight title from Dempsey after a reign beginning in 1919.
