Diario La Nación

This page of Santiago's La Nación for 20 October 1926 mixed fiction with farm business. Beneath a strip of subscription rates it began a short story by Jean Reibrach, "La Máscara," in which a narrator visits an old acquaintance confined in an asylum after his wife was reportedly devoured by wolves during a summer stay in a mountain village; the narrator is astonished that her death should have driven him mad. A report on Chilean livestock praised a breeding establishment for nearly a quarter-century of prestige and announced that the main prizes in the sheep section of the current Exposition had gone to the Criadero San Carlos. An advertisement by Saavedra Bénard & Cía. invited farmers visiting the Animal Exposition to its permanent showroom of Deering farm machinery on Calle Catedral.

This reading covers three excerpts from a partial reading of the page. The binding gutter and page curvature clip the left edges of several columns, so the story "La Máscara" and the livestock report break off into word fragments, rendered with omission marks; the word read as "…redown" lacks its beginning, and the fragments after the advertisement appear to come from a neighbouring column. The supplied OCR was badly garbled and was used only where the image confirmed it. Facing-page fragments at the far left and right were not read, and the rest of the page is outside this reading.

A story by JEAN REIBRACH.

A feeling of pity led me one day to the asylum at Ville-Eurad, where an acquaintance of mine from years past was confined. He had lost his reason as a result, so people said, of a frightful accident: his wife, while summering in a mountain village, had been devoured by wolves. One could hardly be surprised that he had gone mad. I had always taken him for an odd man, prone to persecution mania; but what astonished me was that his wife's death, despite the tragic circumstances of the misfortune, should have put him in such a state. Context

The Sociedad Nacional de Agricultura and Santiago's livestock shows

The machinery advertisement ties its invitation to "the Animal Exposition," and the livestock report announces prizes won "at the current Exposition," but neither legible passage names the organizer. The tradition behind such shows is well documented. The Sociedad Nacional de Agricultura (SNA), the association of Chilean landowners and producers founded in 1838, staged the first "Exposición Agrícola, Ganadera e Internacional" in 1869, the forerunner of the later FISA fair. In 1893 it opened genealogical register books for fine-bred livestock, the kind of pedigree recording that gave show prizes like those of Criadero San Carlos their weight among breeders. By the time of this issue the SNA had also pressed successfully for the creation of a Ministry of Agriculture in 1924. Against this background, the page's pairing of a prize report with a machinery advertisement reflects an exhibition culture the SNA had built over more than half a century, in which landowners displayed pedigreed stock and imported technology together. The page itself does not establish that the 1926 show was run by the SNA.

What kind of sheep the "…redown" prize-winners may have been

The livestock report's legible text breaks off around a clipped word ending in "…redown," which fits a compound spelling of an English Down breed such as the Hampshire Down, although the missing letters could also belong to another Down breed. The Hampshire Down is a British breed that arose in the first half of the nineteenth century by crossing the new Southdown with local horned downland sheep. It is reared principally for meat, and its rams are widely used as terminal sires in commercial cross-breeding. The breed has since been exported to every inhabited continent, and present-day figures report populations of over 10,000 head in neighbouring Argentina and in Brazil. If the San Carlos flock was of this type, its prizes in the sheep section point to investment in meat-type breeding rams for crossing rather than in fine wool. The claim that the establishment praised in the legible passage had kept its prestige for almost a quarter-century is the newspaper's own, and the clipped text does not make clear whether that establishment is Criadero San Carlos itself.

The Deering brand and its American maker

The "renowned DEERING brand" promoted by Saavedra Bénard belonged by 1926 to International Harvester of Chicago, formed in 1902 when the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, the Deering Harvester Company and three smaller makers merged. For two decades the former rivals' dealerships kept their own names, and the company's brands included McCormick, Deering and later the combined McCormick-Deering. A Santiago showroom still headlining Deering in 1926 thus sold a name that its American owner was then folding into a joint brand. The route by which such machines reached Chilean estates also had a long institutional history: the SNA promoted the importation of machinery from the United States and Europe, and its nineteenth-century predecessor counted helping to import agricultural machinery and tools among its main goals. The advertisement does not say how Saavedra Bénard came to handle the brand, but it shows that this Santiago trading firm kept a permanent display of the brand on Calle Catedral and timed its appeal to the livestock show.

How far Chilean agriculture had modernized by the 1920s

The prize flocks and the machinery showroom on this page represent the modernizing edge of a very uneven countryside. Historians summarized by Chile's National Library note that during the nineteenth-century wheat boom machinery was introduced for certain tasks such as threshing, without any mass modernization of agriculture. After the War of the Pacific some zones did modernize, especially the valleys near the capital, while most estates kept traditional technology and labour systems. In the early twentieth century landowners tended to reinforce the inquilinaje system of resident tenant labour in the face of rural-to-urban migration. Read in that light, an advertisement inviting "farmers" to inspect imported farm machinery in central Santiago, and a report celebrating pedigreed sheep, speak to the estate owners of the central valley who could afford such investment, not to Chilean rural life as a whole.
