- THE DISASTER AT KATWIJK.
- COMMEMORATION OF THE 400th BIRTH YEAR OF CAROLUS CLUSIUS
The Leidsch Dagblad of 19 October 1926 led with the news that Mayor N. C. de Gijselaar had asked the Queen to release him, for health reasons, from 1 January of the following year. The paper described the dismay in the council and the town, quoted the popular song about him, and listed works of his 16-year term, from the electric tram and a new HBS to the rerouted Rhine-Schie canal. It also praised his wartime devotion and his skill in chairing the council. A front-page column continued the paper's own relief fund for Katwijk families hit by the loss of the vessel KW. 152, with small gifts from firms, schools and individuals bringing the total to f 1686.83½. A municipal notice about a housewives' exhibition followed. The report on the Clusius anniversary survives here only as its headline.

Our Burgomaster is leaving.
Jhr. Mr. Dr. N. C. de Gijselaar has asked H.M. the Queen to grant him honourable discharge as burgomaster of Leiden, for reasons of health, with effect from 1 January next. This news, which was communicated confidentially to the council members yesterday and which this morning also spread among the citizenry, was received with dismay and at the same time with regret, partly because of the reasons that compelled our burgomaster to take this decision, but also and above all because in Jhr. De Gijselaar we are losing a burgomaster such as we will hardly get again. “There is only one good Leidenaar, that is Gijselaar,” so often sung to him during his 16-year stay here, characterises him and his popularity in a way that could hardly be rendered better in long speeches. His departure means a great loss for our municipality, which will only truly be felt when we miss him both as head of the municipality and as chairman of the municipal council. When by Royal Decree of 19 January … council member, Prof. Mr. S. J. Fockema Andreae.
In the speech with which the new burgomaster took up his office, he promised to give his best energies to the interests of this municipality, to stand above the parties and to become a good citizen of the city. He kept this promise during the more than 16 years of his burgomastership. He felt grateful then to be allowed to take up the office in a relatively favourable period, when industry and trade could rejoice in growing prosperity. Who could then have imagined that a little over four years later such a difficult time would dawn; a time that would demand so much, above all of a head of the municipality?
Before the war, much was indeed accomplished under his burgomastership. Let us mention only the construction of the electric tram, the vaulting over of the Kort-Rapenburg, the renewal and widening of the Blauwpoortsbrug, the building of a new Higher Civic School, the rerouting of the Rhine-Schie canal, … a provincial magistrate who in this difficult time took as his example the famous burgomaster Van der Werff in the struggle against Spain, in devotion and in self-sacrificing dedication to the citizenry.
In these last years public housing was taken in hand with vigour, and with it the housing shortage was combated. Here too Jhr. De Gijselaar gave good leadership.
As chairman of the Leiden municipal council he proved to be the right man in the right place. Without holding the reins too tight, he knew how to lead the deliberations in excellent fashion and, because he had always thoroughly worked himself into the matters, to master the debates.
If we thus lose in him an excellent head of the municipality, we also see a worthy citizen and a warm-hearted man leave us.
That his qualities of mind and heart were also appreciated in a wider circle is proven by his appointment as member of the First Chamber of the States General, as president-curator of our University, as chairman of the College for the Fisheries

Context
How De Gijselaar became mayor of Leiden in 1910
The Leidsch Dagblad recalls that De Gijselaar was appointed by Royal Decree as successor to the late N. de Ridder while he already sat in the Provincial States of South Holland for the Gorinchem district, his birthplace. The Dutch parliamentary biography confirms that he represented Gorinchem in the Provincial States from 1906 to 1913 and that he was mayor of Leiden from 1 March 1910 to 1 January 1927, the same date from which, according to the paper, he asked to be discharged. A memorial biography printed in the 1942 yearbook of the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde explains how he reached Leiden: his contact with the Queen's Commissioner, Patijn, in the Provincial States led Patijn to put him forward as candidate. The paper's account of the inaugural speech, with its promise to stand above the parties and to become a good citizen of the city, therefore records a man from Gorinchem introducing himself to Leiden.
What the song about the “one good Leidenaar” meant
The paper treats the refrain “There is only one good Leidenaar, that is Gijselaar” as the best short portrait of the mayor's popularity. The parliamentary biography records the same song as evidence of that popularity. The 1942 memorial biography adds its origin: the song was sung at the Sociëteit Minerva very soon after his arrival, and Leiden people knew that it was really an insult to the rest of the citizenry. The same memoir says that three years later nobody thought of that origin any more and the song had simply become the standard way of paying tribute to the popular head of the municipality. When the paper quoted it on 19 October 1926, the refrain served purely as a tribute.
The works and wartime record the paper credited to him
The paper lists the electric tram, the vaulting of the Kort-Rapenburg, the rebuilt Blauwpoortsbrug, a new HBS and the rerouted Rhine-Schie canal as achievements before the war, and it compares his conduct in the difficult years with that of Van der Werff, the mayor of the struggle against Spain. The parliamentary biography independently names three of these works from his term: the electric tram, the rerouting of the Rhine-Schie canal and a municipal HBS. The 1942 memoir gives substance to the wartime comparison: during the First World War the mayor of Leiden brought the distribution of food and clothing, and everything connected with it, under his own direction. The same memoir describes the De Gijselaar bench at the start of the Rapenburg, unveiled on 23 April 1920, as an expression of the citizens' gratitude for that work. The paper's line about a time that would demand so much of a head of the municipality refers to these war years.
Which posts De Gijselaar kept after leaving the mayoralty
The paper attributes the resignation to his health, mentioning a very serious operation and a condition that insiders knew had never become as good again; the parliamentary biography likewise records that he gave up the mayoralty because of health problems. The same biography shows that his public career went on. He took a seat in the First Chamber again on 16 November 1926, about four weeks after this report, and held it until 1937. He remained chairman of the board of curators of Leiden University until 16 September 1928, the post the paper calls president-curator, and his chairmanship of the College van Visscherijen, the fisheries body the paper also names, ran until 1927. The paper's tribute thus marks the end of his municipal office, while several of the wider posts it lists continued for years.
How the Leidsch Dagblad ran the Katwijk relief fund
The Katwijk column is a running subscription list kept by the paper itself for families at Katwijk aan Zee hit hard by the loss of KW. 152, which the paper's appeal calls a logger. The gifts recorded that day were mostly small and came from individuals identified by initials, from the staff of firms such as the Ned. Rotogravuremaatschappij, from a school class and from a school that collected silver paper. The paper reports a cumulative total of f 1686.83½ and invites further gifts through its own giro account, number 57055, the same number printed in its masthead, or through the Amsterdamsche Bank under the reference “K. W. logger 152”. These lines report only the collection and leave the wreck itself and the division of the money among the families undescribed. The departing mayor was connected with the fishing sector: the parliamentary biography records that De Gijselaar chaired the College van Visscherijen from 1912 to 1927.
Why Leiden remembered Clusius in 1926
The headline announces a commemoration of the four-hundredth anniversary of the birth of Carolus Clusius. Clusius was born in 1526 in Arras, then in the County of Artois in the Spanish Netherlands, so 1926 was his fourth centenary year. His tie to Leiden was direct: he was appointed professor at the University of Leiden in October 1593 and became the first praefectus of its new botanical garden, and there he helped to create one of the earliest formal botanical gardens of Europe. His cultivation of tulips in the Leiden garden is credited with laying the foundations of the Dutch tulip bulb industry. A Leiden commemoration in 1926 therefore honoured both a figure of the university's early history and the starting point of a national industry.
