- The Paraguayan Football Delegation Arrived in Santiago Last Night
- A Trophy for the Paraguay–Chile Match
- THE SOUTH AMERICAN FOOTBALL CONGRESS MET IN THE EARLY HOURS OF TODAY
The sports coverage centred on the South American Championship then under way in Santiago. La Nación reported that the Paraguayan football delegation had arrived the night before, quoting Mr. Ayala on Paraguay's close friendship with Chile, his earlier visit in 1921 as an embassy secretary on the way to Peru, and a gruelling five-day journey, and praising Adriano Irala, head of the Paraguayan Football League. A short item announced that the jeweller La Equitativa had given a bronze lion trophy, and the Teatro Setiembre's manager a captain's cup, for the Chile–Paraguay match. A report on a pre-dawn session of the South American football congress followed the Argentine, Chilean and other delegates as they argued over postponing Paraguay's first match, an Argentine-Paraguayan agreement to play on Wednesday the 20th, and a Chilean offer of Thursday the 21st, with two recesses called.
This edition translates three sports items from a partial reading of the 19 October 1926 page: the Paraguayan delegation's arrival, the trophy for the Chile–Paraguay match and the South American football congress report. The page is curved and cut off at the tile edges, so the opening lines of the first two items and the start of the congress report survive only as broken fragments, marked […] in the translations; names and numbers in those fragments are uncertain. The Uruguayan captain José Nasazzi's article on the Chile–Uruguay match, whose headline is cut off, is not among the selected excerpts, so the refereeing and crowd controversy it concerns is not covered here.

"It is a great pleasure for us," Mr. Ayala tells us, "to arrive in this beautiful country, with which Paraguay cultivates such close ties of friendship. In 1921 I had the honour of getting to know Chile, on my way to Peru, in my capacity as secretary of the Embassy that the Government of Paraguay sent to that country, so I already knew its proverbial hospitality. The jewellery store La Equitativa has placed at the disposal of the Chilean Federation a handsome trophy, consisting of a spirited bronze lion, to be contested between the national team and the representative team of the Paraguayan League in the official match for the Championship. In turn, the manager of the Teatro Setiembre, Mr. Almeida, has donated a cup for the captain of the winning team in this same match. 18

The Argentine delegate, Mr. Ducca, states that there is an agreement between them and the Paraguayans to set the match for Wednesday the 20th. The Chilean delegate repeats his offer that Paraguay play Chile on Thursday the 21st. Mr. Ducca opposes the modification of the fixture. The president says that the date on which Paraguay can play must be settled first. Mr. Casabianca asks that, there being no serious reasons to the contrary, the Argentina–Paraguay match be set for Wednesday. At the request of the Chilean delegate, a recess is called so that they can reach agreement. When the session reopens, some disagreements arise over how to interpret the modification of the fixture, which prompts a new request for a recess from the Argentine delegates.
Context
How the 1926 championship in Santiago was organised
The 1926 South American Championship was the tenth championship for members of CONMEBOL, and Chile hosted it from 12 October to 3 November 1926, with every game played in Santiago. Brazil withdrew before the start, leaving five of the six member associations: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. The format was a single round-robin in which each team played all the others once, and the winner was decided by total points across all matches. Because every team had to meet every other, all ten matches had to fit on one shared calendar. When La Nación reported that the Paraguayans had arrived on the night of 18 October, the tournament had already been running for a week. That helps explain why the congress delegates in this edition argued over fitting Paraguay's first match into the existing fixture without changing the later dates. Argentina had come in as defending champions after winning the 1925 edition.
What became of the dates the congress argued over
The congress report has the Argentine delegate Ducca citing an agreement with the Paraguayans to play on Wednesday 20 October, while the Chilean delegate repeated his offer of Thursday 21 October for a Paraguay–Chile match. The tournament record shows that the Argentine date stood: three days after Uruguay beat Chile on 17 October, Argentina met Paraguay and won 8–0, with Gabino Sosa scoring four goals. The Chile–Paraguay match was not played on the 21st. It became the last match of the whole championship, on 3 November, when David Arellano scored a hat-trick and Chile won 5–1. That was the official championship match for which this edition announced La Equitativa's bronze lion and the Teatro Setiembre's cup for the winning captain.
How Paraguay's campaign ended
The delegation that Ayala described as arriving after five consecutive days of hard travel won only one of its four matches. After the 8–0 defeat by Argentina, Paraguay beat Bolivia 6–1 on 23 October. Uruguay then defeated Paraguay 6–1 in their own last match, and that win crowned them champions for the sixth time. Paraguay's final game was the 5–1 loss to Chile, played two days later as the last match of the competition. The trophy match announced in this edition was therefore played after the title had already been decided.
The ground at Ñuñoa where the matches were played
All matches of the 1926 championship were held at the Estadio Sport de Ñuñoa in Santiago, which Chile's National Library, through Memoria Chilena, describes as the Campos de Sports de Ñuñoa. In his will the benefactor José Domingo Cañas asked that part of his land in Ñuñoa be set aside for playing fields for young people. The Campos de Sports were built on that land in 1918, where the streets Campo de Deportes and José Domingo Cañas run today. Memoria Chilena lists the 1926 South American football championship among the memorable events held there, alongside the South American athletics championships of 1920 and 1927. The ground was demolished shortly before the Estadio Nacional went up on the same land. The dates the congress argued over and the trophy match La Nación announced all referred to games at this ground.
