Context
A publisher selling its own history
The Commercial Press was founded in Shanghai in 1897 and grew from printing into publishing and education. Invoking thirty years of business made the firm’s longevity part of the sales pitch. The anniversary language asked readers to recognize a familiar institution as well as consider the books it was offering.
Two reasons to buy now
Gifts and lower prices offer different incentives. One adds something to a purchase; the other reduces its cost. Putting both in large type turns the commemoration into an immediate shopping opportunity. The tiny amount of wording is designed to draw attention quickly in a newspaper filled with competing announcements.
Books as a modern consumer market
A publishing house devoted to cultural and educational work still needed buyers. This promotion places books in the same world of special offers and customer incentives as other goods. It shows how the circulation of learning depended not only on authors and schools, but also on the ordinary commercial work of persuading readers to make a purchase.
