Context
The minister behind the program
Ivan Krajač was a Croatian politician with experience in finance who became minister of trade and industry in 1925. His work included support for craftspeople and a commercial agreement with Austria in 1926. The headline therefore introduces a minister whose economic interests extended from small businesses to foreign trade.
An economic plan inside a divided government
Krajač sought changes in economic administration, more equal taxation and administrative savings. His 1926 program included an advisory economic council, but it was rejected and his position in government weakened. This political background gives substance to the newspaper’s language of a stirred public: economic reorganization also raised disagreements over how the state should be governed.
Building an economy for the enlarged kingdom
The state created in 1918 brought a larger territory under common institutions. Its national bank extended operations across that territory in 1920, and the dinar stabilized from May 1925. By the time of this debate, monetary conditions had improved, but a stable currency alone did not settle the organization of trade, production or regional development—the wider tasks an economic program was expected to address.
