Leidsch Dagblad

This Leiden daily's front page combined city business with news of lectures. A heading marked the death of M. Joustra, and the text that follows it in the selection is the end of a Leiden council agenda. The items include a building deposit linked to a renovation, an amendment to the 1923 elementary-school ordinance, the sale of building land on the Schelpenkade, a re-vote on hospital-care tariffs, and a plan for 20 ground-floor and 20 upper-floor municipal dwellings south of the Haagweg to rehouse people from homes declared uninhabitable. After a jubilee report on the popular “Thomas”, the paper announced that the German philosopher Reinhard Strecker would lecture in the university towns from 1 to 9 November at the invitation of the National Committee against Alcoholism. A report on an educational evening explained how a typesetter's mistake had turned J. T. de Ren's talk on “the education of the will” into an announced talk on “the education of the military”.

Finally the festivities moved to the home of the man whose jubilee it was, where all evening there was a constant coming and going of people who wished, by their visit, to show their sympathy for “Thomas”.

LECTURE TOUR OF PROF. DR. REINHARD STRECKER.

In the week of 1–9 November this well-known German scholar, invited for the purpose by the “National Committee against Alcoholism”, will give a series of lectures in our university towns. In philosophical circles Prof. Strecker is well known. As a Privatdozent in Giessen and later as professor in Jena he published several important works, such as “Das Asthetische Genuss”, “Kants Ethik” and “Die Anfänge Fichte's Staatsphilosophie”. Prof. Strecker also plays an important role in the social and political field. Works such as “Religion und Politik bei Goethe”, “Gott und die Kirche” and “Die Neugestaltung des deutschen Unterrichts” bear witness to this.

EDUCATIONAL EVENING IN THE G. H. L. WARD BUILDING, LANGESTRAAT.

the municipality of Leiden has once again become richer by one useful institution. Let us hope that the advisory bureau will be widely used. Naturally, the press will be notified in due course when this body begins its work.

EDUCATIONAL EVENING IN THE G. H. L. WARD BUILDING, LANGESTRAAT.

Last night Mr. J. T. de Ren gave his lecture on “The Education of the Will”, and not, as had been announced through a comical mistake, on the education of the military. The speaker began by explaining this error. The typesetter had probably taken the W for an M, assumed that the word was abbreviated, and set about writing it out in full in his own way. If he were speaking on the education of the military, the speaker could be brief. He would then merely recall the words: “Thou shalt not kill” and “Love God above all and thy neighbour as thy

Meint Joustra, missionary linguist of the Karo-Batak lands

The heading “M. JOUSTRA. †” marks the death of Meint Joustra. According to the Biographisch woordenboek van protestantsche godgeleerden, he died in Leiden on 20 October 1926, the day before this issue, and was buried in Sneek on the 23rd. Born in 1871 and trained by the Nederlandsch Zendelinggenootschap in Rotterdam, he was sent to Deli in Sumatra, where a mission had been started in 1890 at the request of the tobacco companies and was still in its early stages. Joustra decided that winning the population's trust meant learning its language. His best-known work, a Karo-Batak dictionary of 1907, was issued on behalf of the Ministry of Colonies. When the Bataksch Instituut was founded in 1908 to process all information on the Batak people scientifically, its board appointed him first as laboratory assistant and later as archivist. Four years later the institute was absorbed into the Koloniaal Instituut, and Joustra also taught Malay to people leaving for the Indies. His career shows how a missionary's language work in Sumatra led to a post at a colonial research institution based in Leiden.

Why an anti-alcohol committee invited Reinhard Strecker

Strecker was a leading figure in the German abstinence movement, and that background explains the invitation from the National Committee against Alcoholism better than the philosophical career the notice puts first. German Wikipedia describes him as a member of the German Peace Society and leader of the Good Templar order in Germany. The Hessian parliamentary-history database records that in 1924 he became head of the Zentralverband deutscher Enthaltsamkeitsvereine, the central federation of German abstinence societies, in Berlin. He also had political experience. He served as Hessian Kultusminister, the minister responsible for education and culture, from 22 February 1919 to 1 October 1921, and at the end of 1921 he left the DDP in protest against Reichswehr minister Otto Geßler. A former education minister who led Germany's abstinence federation was a fitting speaker for a Dutch temperance body that wanted to reach the university towns. The fetched sources do not record the committee's own reasons for the invitation.

Strecker's academic career and the works the paper listed

The paper's description of Strecker as a Privatdozent in Giessen and later a professor in Jena broadly matches the record. German Wikipedia states that he obtained his habilitation in Giessen in 1917 with a work on Fichte's political philosophy, which corresponds to the paper's “Die Anfänge Fichte's Staatsphilosophie”. He was appointed Oberschulrat, a senior school inspector, in 1923 and became an honorary professor at the University of Jena in 1924, so the paper's plain “professor” simplifies an honorary post. Two titles the paper cites appear in his bibliography as Giessen publications: Religion und Politik bei Goethe (1908) and Kants Ethik (1909). The paper's “Das Asthetische Genuss” refers to his 1901 dissertation, Der ästhetische Genuss auf Grund der ästhetischen Apperzeption, though the printed title differs from the original in its article and spelling.

Dutch temperance campaigning up to 1926

By 1926 the Dutch anti-drink movement had won partial gains through legislation but also suffered a narrow defeat. According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the amended Drinking Act of 1904 allowed municipalities to restrict licences for the sale of spirits. In 1914 temperance campaigners collected 670,000 signatures in support of writing so-called local option into law. A private member's bill for local option, introduced in 1919 by the ARP member of parliament Rutgers, failed only narrowly. CBS notes that consumption of distilled spirits fell from about 4 litres of pure alcohol per head to under 1 litre by the end of the 1930s, and attributes this partly to organized temperance work. The historian Jan-Willem Gerritsen describes such movements as part of a broader civilizing campaign directed at the lower working classes by members of the middle class. Strecker's November 1926 tour of the university towns for the National Committee against Alcoholism took place in this setting, seven years after the local-option bill narrowly failed.
