La Nación of Santiago reported on the seventh round of the 1926 South American Football Championship, played the previous day against Bolivia. Its match report followed a passing move from Fernández to Castro to Scarone that ended when the Bolivian fullback Sainz, trying to block the shot, turned the ball into his own net, the sixth goal Bolivia conceded. Next to it the paper printed remarks from the two captains, Méndez and Nazasi, in which the 'Olympic captain' called the Bolivians' display that day their best so far. Elsewhere on the page, an advertisement headed 'Casamientos' (Marriages) spoke directly to women about 'horrible ailments' and dangerous genital disorders.
This reading covers three excerpts transcribed from the page images: part of the match report, the opening of the captains' interview and the opening of an advertisement. The supplied OCR was heavily garbled and was not used for the text. In several tiles, characters at the left margin are lost in the binding gutter; elsewhere, column edges are cut at tile boundaries and the left part of a financial table is cut off. None of the cut text was reconstructed. The advertisement excerpt does not name the product being sold.

The 7th Round of the South American Football Championship Was Played Yesterday
In the 17th minute, Fernández passes to Castro and Castro to Scarone. Fullback Sainz steps in and tries to deflect Scarone's shot, but does so with bad luck, driving the ball into his own goal. The Bolivian stronghold had fallen for the sixth time.
CAPTAINS MENDEZ AND NAZASI SPEAK TO “LA NACION”
Today's performance by the distinguished Bolivian sportsmen—the Olympic captain tells us—has been, in my view, the best they have given so far.

Context
How the 1926 championship was staged in Santiago
The match La Nación reported belonged to the 1926 South American Championship. Chile hosted the tournament from 12 October to 3 November 1926, and because Brazil withdrew before it began, only five associations took part: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay. The competition was a single round-robin, so each team played every other team once and the title went to the side with the most points; the matches were played on different days, so each numbered 'etapa', like the seventh round in the headline, was a single fixture. All the matches were played at the ground in Ñuñoa that Chile's national library, through Memoria Chilena, identifies as the Campos de Sports, built in 1918. Memoria Chilena calls it Santiago's first large multi-sport venue and lists the 1926 South American football championship among the memorable events held there.
Bolivia's debut and the match against Uruguay
Bolivia came to Santiago as a newcomer. Its national team made its international debut at this tournament, a year after the Bolivian Football Federation was founded, and the federation joined FIFA in 1926. Against the hosts on 12 October the Bolivians scored first but lost 7–1, and they went on to lose 0–5 to Argentina, 1–6 to Paraguay and 0–6 to Uruguay. The last of these is the match described on this page: on 28 October Uruguay moved clear at the top of the table, and the modern tournament summary credits Héctor Scarone with five goals in it. La Nación tells one goal differently, as a shot by Scarone that defender Sainz deflected into his own net; the excerpt alone does not show how that goal was finally recorded. The interview printed alongside shows how the result was framed at the time, with the 'Olympic captain' praising the Bolivians' display as their best yet, even after a six-goal defeat.
What followed for Bolivian football after 1926
The four defeats in Santiago were the start of a long climb. Bolivia first took part in the South American Championship in 1926, but it needed 23 years and 26 matches to win a game in the competition. The country's greatest football achievement came only in 1963, when Bolivia hosted the South American Championship and won it. Read against that record, the heavy scorelines reported in October 1926 mark the first step of a national team that would take decades to become competitive at continental level.
Women's health advertising in 1920s Chile
The 'Casamientos' notice belongs to a familiar type of early twentieth-century Chilean advertising. Memoria Chilena's study of women and advertising between 1900 and 1930 notes that advertising language in those decades was direct and explicit, and that matters previously confined to the private sphere were now made public through advertisements. It also observes that newer messages about caring for the body and good nutrition stood in contrast to the traditional advertisements promoting curative substances for women's diseases, the category to which this notice, with its talk of dangerous genital disorders, belongs. The heading 'Marriages' fits another strategy the same study identifies: advertisers used and reinforced women's aspirations, such as 'conquering' a husband, to sell their products.
