- Johnny Dundee Will Challenge Tod Morgan for the Championship Title in California
Crítica's page of 15 October 1926 gave prominent space to dispatches from Santiago de Chile, where Argentina's national team was about to open its South American Championship campaign against Bolivia. Captain Vaccaro described a squad that had lost weight but trained comfortably, split practice between nine married men and eight bachelors, praised the Rosario players and predicted the title while conceding Uruguay's strength; Chilean opinion took an Argentine win for granted and cared only about the margin. A Rome dispatch reported Italian industrialists' alarm at a German-British industrial conference, quoting Il Popolo d'Italia's charge that rich nations were combining to monopolize raw materials. An AP item from San Francisco announced Tod Morgan's ten-round junior lightweight title defense against Johnny Dundee.

“We Will Win the South American Football Championship” —Says Captain Vaccaro
Vaccaro says that the boys, although they have lost weight, are in good health and their agility and stamina are excellent. “If luck helps us even a little, and without denying the qualities of our opponents,” he adds, “we should win the championship.”
NO ONE DISPUTES THE ARGENTINES' VICTORY
(Agencia Austral) SANTIAGO DE CHILE, 15. – The prospects for the match to be played tomorrow between the Argentine and Bolivian teams hold no interest whatsoever, except for the evident eagerness to see the Argentines in action. From the information available here, which the press is reproducing, there is not the slightest doubt that victory will go to the Argentines. The showing the Bolivians made on Tuesday against the Chileans, while it reveals that the players from the altiplano have physical qualities and a technique that no one suspected, is nonetheless far from allowing one to think that they could trouble the Argentines. The Argentines are in unbeatable training condition, although all of them have lost weight [?] they arrived in Chile.
The characteristics of tomorrow's opposing sides are completely different. The Bolivians play an open, disjointed game and are inexperienced. The Argentines play as a unit and are solid, strong and determined. The Bolivians will have against them a fast forward line that is in the habit of unleashing powerful shots.
Vaccaro speaks
The captain of the Argentine team, Vaccaro, told us: “The boys are fine. The change in their way of life has brought a loss of weight in all of them, but the squad as a whole is in good health, and their agility and stamina are excellent. They have handled these days' training sessions comfortably, even though we carried them out with some vigor. The team has nine married men and eight bachelors, and we practice married against single. The spirit of both is admirable. As for outings, some want to enjoy themselves, but they always respond to my requests, and I am extremely pleased with everyone's behavior, but especially with that of the Rosario men. The spirit of these men is simply marvelous in terms of dedication, effort and enthusiasm.”
Asked what prospects he saw for the final standings, he answered: “If luck helps us even a little, we should win. There is no exaggerated optimism or show of bravado in this statement. The team, united, is well trained and has every chance of finishing as champion. I do not deny that the qualities of our opponents, especially those of the Uruguayans, are excellent, but I have my reasons for seriously thinking that final victory will favor us.”
Argentine victory taken for granted
General opinion takes the Argentines' victory in tomorrow's match for granted in advance. The only interest lies in the number of goals they will score, so as to make a possible comparison with the result of the Chile–Argentina match, which will be played on October 21.
The diplomatic representatives have been invited
(Agencia Austral) SANTIAGO DE CHILE, 15. – For the match that the Argentine and Bolivian teams will play tomorrow at the Campos de Sport de Ñuñoa, the diplomats of both countries have been specially invited.

The industrialists of that country say that the German-British conference was not given its due importance
A NEWSPAPER SPEAKS
(Agencia Austral) ROME, 15. – The most important leaders of Italian industry are asking themselves uneasily what the true significance is of the conference that German and British industrialists held last week. They believe that those deliberations, despite the little importance the British press gave them, are in reality the most important to have taken place on European industry since the World War ended. “Il Popolo d'Italia,” evidently inspired by the highest authority, declares in an editorial that “far from being based on the economic aims of Locarno, the conference seeks to exploit the markets of the world through the rich nations, monopolizing raw materials, and since Italy consumes and does not produce raw materials, it is not possible for it to take part in those combinations.”
Johnny Dundee Will Challenge Tod Morgan for the Championship Title in California
(Associated Press) SAN FRANCISCO, 15. – Next Tuesday has been set for the first boxing match for a title to be held in San Francisco in twelve years. It is the ten-round bout between Tod Morgan and Johnny Dundee for the junior lightweight championship title held by the former.
Context
How Argentina actually fared in the 1926 championship
Argentina finished second, and Vaccaro's confident forecast of the title was not borne out. Arriving as defending champions after winning the 1925 edition, Argentina opened on 16 October with exactly the comfortable win over Bolivia that the Santiago correspondents expected, 5–0. On 24 October, however, Uruguay—the opponent Vaccaro himself singled out as excellent—beat Argentina 2–0 and drew level with them at the top. The Chile–Argentina match that the article dates to 21 October was eventually played at the end of the month, three days after Uruguay's 28 October game, and ended 1–1. Uruguay won all four of their matches and took their sixth title, while Argentina placed second with five points, 14 goals scored and three conceded.
Why the goal tally against Bolivia interested the Santiago press
The tournament was a single round-robin, played entirely in Santiago, with the title decided by total points across all matches. Bolivia had opened the competition on 12 October—the Tuesday showing the article refers to—losing 7–1 to Chile, with David Arellano scoring four. Because Chile and Argentina had not yet met, the only common yardstick was what each could do against Bolivia, which is why the dispatch says the sole interest lay in Argentina's number of goals. On that measure Argentina's 5–0 fell short of Chile's 7–1. Bolivia went on to lose all four matches, scoring two goals and conceding 24, which matches the correspondent's verdict that the altiplano side could not trouble the leading teams, even though the same article granted that they had shown unexpected physical qualities and technique.
What the European steel cartel was
The International Steel Agreement, the European steel cartel, was created on 20 September 1926, only weeks before this dispatch. It was directed by a council of industry representatives from Germany, France, Belgium and Luxembourg, and its purposes were to sustain prices, divide quotas among member states and companies, and secure members' supplies of iron ore and coke. British firms were not founding members: the agreement took on a global dimension only in 1929, through an arrangement with American, British and Canadian companies. The German-British industrialists' conference that the Rome dispatch describes is therefore a separate strand from the cartel's founding as these histories record it. Il Popolo d'Italia's charge that the new combinations aimed at monopolizing raw materials nonetheless touched a real feature of the steel cartel, which made control of ore and coke supplies one of its aims.
Why the Italian editorial invoked “the economic aims of Locarno”
Il Popolo d'Italia measured the conference against Locarno because the international cartel agreements of the mid-1920s coincided with the revival of political cooperation brought by the Locarno Treaties, signed on 16 October 1925. Some European governments saw international cartel agreements as a first step toward closer economic cooperation between countries, and some observers went further, treating cartels as a new mechanism for economic stability in times of crisis and even as an instrument for peace—questions later discussed at the League of Nations' 1927 World Economic Conference. The editorial, which the dispatch describes as evidently inspired by the highest authority, turned that hope around: it portrayed the combination as rich nations exploiting world markets and cornering raw materials, from which an importer of raw materials such as Italy was shut out.
How the Morgan–Dundee title fight turned out
Tod Morgan kept his title. On 19 October 1926—the Tuesday announced in the AP item—he beat Johnny Dundee on a ten-round points decision at Recreation Park in San Francisco in a world junior lightweight title match, and was considered to have won six of the ten rounds. Dundee, eleven years older than the champion, may have injured his hand in the third round and was at a decided disadvantage by the eighth. Morgan had won the title on 2 December 1925 by stopping Mike Ballerino in Los Angeles, and he came to San Francisco fresh from another defense: on 30 September 1926 he had beaten Joe Glick over fifteen rounds at Madison Square Garden.
