Leidsch Dagblad

This Saturday page opened Leiden's 3 October weekend with a lively preview. The Town Hall was tried out for the festivities and the new electric lighting at the Lunapark funfair was tested; seven choral societies rehearsed the chorale music, and the programme ran from a knights' tournament rehearsal to a children's farce and an Amsterdam cabaret, with the main celebration held over to Monday after a quiet Sunday. The paper also reported a lecture to the Society of Dutch Literature by Dr. Chr. Kroes-Ligtenberg, who compared Marie Bashkirtseff's famous diary with recent German diaries by adolescents. A notice from the Leiden Dune Water Company warned that laying new mains between Katwijk, Rijnsburg and Oegstgeest would lower water pressure for a time, and asked consumers to save water.

The 3 October festivities begin

…of the Town Hall to be tested, whereby for a while everyone's attention was fixed on this classic building, to which, after all, so many memories are attached. The new electric lighting at the Lunapark was likewise put to the test, which showed that the Schuttersveld too will be brilliantly lit this evening and on Monday evening. In the "Graanbeurs" the dress rehearsal for the chorale music was held last night under the proven leadership of Mr. C. B. Duyster. Participation was splendid. Rarely have we seen so many singers, women and men, gathered there for this purpose, and the cooperation of seven choral societies guarantees us once again this year a fine prelude to the feast day.

This afternoon at 3 o'clock the festivities opened at the Lunapark with its more than 150 different amusements. The field looks good. If it stays that way, then this year no visitors' shoes are likely to remain stuck in the mud, as, according to history, seems to have happened now and then in the past. This afternoon the dress rehearsal takes place of the Knightly Play with tournament on the Hooge-Rijndijk, which will already draw many people to this part of the town. This evening the young ones are treated to a children's performance in the Schouwburg, where the comic children's farce in 3 acts "Tijl Uilenspiegel" will be staged, one of the best pieces in the field of children's comedies. For their elders, the doors of the Stadsgehoorzaal will open this evening, and a company under the direction of the Theater-bureau Max van Gelder of Amsterdam will give a cabaret performance.

Thus we are being prepared for the actual celebration next Monday. It is certainly good that a Sunday of rest and serious reflection comes in between. Otherwise we would get too much of a good thing in one breath.

Society of Dutch Literature.

At the first monthly meeting of the Society of Dutch Literature this season, Mrs. Dr. Chr. Kroes-Ligtenberg, of Rotterdam, gave a lecture last night on: "The Youth Book of Marie Bashkirtseff, measured against others after 50 years."

The speaker began by remarking that the appearance in 1887 of the Youth Book of the Russian painter, who died in Paris at the age of 24, was an event. Among the many who wrote about her, she named Gladstone Paul Dechanel, Laura Marthom, Johan de Meester; everyone found something extraordinary in her. Not long ago, alongside her two volumes of "Journal", the "Lettres" and the "Nouveau Journal", four volumes of "Cahiers Intimes" were also published by Pierre Borel, and on that occasion Albérie Cahuet once again sketched her life and her personality in his "Moussia". What was remarkable was not her early death, nor her splendid grave, nor even the fact that a girl from high society had become an artist, but that from her 12th year she had written down all her feelings, thoughts and the events of her life, without wanting to make literature. She did hope to become immortal through her diary, but like all diarists she wrote for herself.

In Germany, the speaker said, various diaries of young people in the years of transition have been published in recent years, which she had laid alongside that of Marie Bashkirtseff: that of Otto Braun "Das Tage -…

Leiden Dune Water Company

Of this, 1265 m was already carried out in the spring, but in view of the greater water consumption in the summer months, the further work was postponed until the autumn. Now the first to be carried out is the section in the Sandtlaan, municipality of Katwijk, as far as the municipality of Rijnsburg, over a length of 1425 m, connecting with what was already laid in the spring; after that, the 2nd section from the Rhijnzichtweg (former Groenesteeg) to the Rijksstraatweg, municipality of Oegstgeest, over a length of 900 m.

The first section will necessarily cause the greatest drop in pressure, because the dune water will then have to be forced through a single main pipe; hence the request to be sparing in the use of dune water during that period and to prevent any waste of water, which can only help to keep the reduction in pressure as small as possible. Once the 1st section has been connected, the 2nd section will not cause such a great drop in pressure, because meanwhile, through the good care of the Company, a main pipe has been laid in the Rhijnzichtweg (Groenesteeg), whereby an important supply via Oegstgeest has again been established.

The whole work is being carried out by the firm C. de Ruiter, represented by Mr. C. Hoogendoorn, of Oegstgeest, under the direction of the Management of the said Company. Although conditions are less favourable than in the spring, especially in view of the shorter daylight, all measures have been taken to bring these works to a good conclusion as quickly as possible, whereby a considerably better supply for our municipality will be brought about. Context

Why Leiden celebrates on 3 October

The festivities previewed here commemorate the relief of Leiden on 3 October 1574. The relief ended the Spanish siege of 1573–74 during the Eighty Years' War, and the arriving rebels fed the starving citizens herring and white bread. The page shows how the anniversary had grown by 1926 into a civic festival lasting several days. The paper reports a Lunapark with more than 150 amusements, electric illumination, choral music and a knights' tournament, which was the 3 October Association's fourth large open-air play. Because 3 October 1926 fell on a Sunday, the paper looks ahead to the main celebration on Monday and welcomes a day of rest in between. The funfair has lasted: the 3 October Festival is still held in Leiden every year with a funfair.

Marie Bashkirtseff and the later history of her diary

Marie Bashkirtseff was a painter who lived and worked in Paris. Her journal, first published in 1887, was only the second diary by a woman to be published in France. Its fame explains where the lecturer began. The "Gladstone" at the head of the paper's garbled list of commentators is very probably William Gladstone, the British statesman who called the journal "a book without a parallel". The lecture's figures also reflect the version of her life known at the time. The paper says she died at 24 and wrote from her 12th year. Later research on the original manuscript found, however, that her mother had changed her birth year from 1858 to 1860 to make her seem more precocious, and that the family had abridged and censored the first editions. So the "Youth Book" that Dr. Kroes-Ligtenberg compared with German adolescent diaries in 1926 was itself an edited text. The full journal came to light only much later.

The Society of Dutch Literature in Leiden

The Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde, whose monthly meeting the paper reports, is a literary and historical society founded in 1766. It is one of the oldest associations in the Netherlands. Frans van Lelyveld and others founded it in Leiden, and it is still based there, which helps explain why its lectures were reported in the local daily. Organising literary and scholarly meetings is among its statutory activities, and the lecture reported here was given at one such gathering, the first monthly meeting of the new season. The speaker, Dr. Kroes-Ligtenberg of Rotterdam, addressed the society at a time when women had only recently entered its leadership: in 1918 Johanna W.A. Naber became the first woman on its executive board.
